Product Description

If you’d like to see full information about this pattern, please visit http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/escalope . . . . . . . If you’d like to see other work by Kourtney Robinson, please visit her designer page here http://www.ravelry.com/designers/kourtney-robinson . . . . . . . Escalope is a half octagon, but it will be familiar to any who have worked top-down triangles. The 'tab-top' beginning is similar, but there are four panels with increases on every other right-side row (instead of two panels with increases on every right-side row). A good intro to lace; the instructions are fully written and fully charted. Each is complete in and of itself, however I’ve taken care to make sure that rows are the same (within sections) from written to charted instructions, so you can cross reference between them. I was inspired by the shells of scallops, and I decided to name this shawl Escalope, which is the Old French word for shell and the basis for the word scallop.

Escalope Shawl by Kourtney Robinson

What Is Being Made

Escalope is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Kourtney Robinson for the Calgary-centric Tapas Yarn Club. This downloadable PDF pattern presents a sophisticated lace shawl inspired by the natural geometry of scallop shells. The shawl measures 80cm (32 inches) in length when blocked, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design draws its name from "Escalope," the Old French word for shell and the etymological basis for the word scallop.

Design Inspiration and Construction

The Escalope shawl begins with a simplified shell shape formed as a plain half octagon. The pattern employs a custom lace variation called wave lace, which the designer developed as an innovative take on the familiar Old Shale lace technique. This wave lace grows according to a Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical pattern found throughout nature. As the lace expands, it gradually meets and consumes the decorative "spines" that separate each lace panel—a design choice that mirrors the biological behavior of scallops filtering and consuming particles from water. When the finished shawl is blocked, the edging develops small but distinct curves that provide a final visual reference to the scallop shell form.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knitting project incorporates lace-work as its primary technique. The pattern features wave lace, a variation on traditional Old Shale lace, which creates an organic, flowing aesthetic. The use of a Fibonacci sequence in the lace expansion adds mathematical elegance to the construction. Knitters will work with stitch markers throughout the project to track pattern repeats and panel separations, requiring careful attention to detail typical of intermediate-level lace knitting.

Yarn and Materials

The Escalope shawl is designed to be worked in a 4-ply yarn weight. The pattern calls for one skein of Yummy Yarn Studio yarn in the colorway "Escalope." This yarn is a blend of 50% superwash merino and 50% tencel, providing both durability and a luxurious drape. Each skein contains 330 meters (365 yards) per 100 grams (3.5 ounces). Knitters will need a 3.5mm (US #4) circular needle and a total of 12 stitch markers in three different styles: 2 Style "A" markers, 6 Style "B" markers, and 4 Style "C" markers to manage the various pattern sections.
