Product Description

Fannette Island in Emerald Bay is the only island in Lake Tahoe. Now permanently closed and a part of Emerald Bay State Park, it once held the private Tea House of Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight. Emerald Bay was formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, but geologists believe there is a rib of very strong granite, and that rib is what formed Fannette Island.

This cowl is elegant and delicate, much like the beautiful tea house which graces the island, but is tough and hard wearing, much like the granite which forms the island. (Interesting note: over the past 100 years, this island has been known as Coquette, Fannette, Baranoff, Dead Man’s, Hermit’s, and Emerald Isle. Fannette is the name that has prevailed.)

This cowl is inspired by and is the little sister of the Crystal Bay shawl. Fanette Island is the only island in Lake Tahoe and rises from Emerald Bay. The island is accessible only by boat, and is now part of a state park. This cowl can be made wider/drapey-er by add

What is Being Made

The Fannette Island Cowl is an elegant and delicate knitted cowl inspired by Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe located in Emerald Bay. This design serves as the little sister to the Crystal Bay shawl. The finished cowl measures 14 inches wide and 17 inches tall when blocked and stretched, creating a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Design Inspiration and Characteristics

The cowl draws inspiration from the natural beauty and history of Fannette Island, which is composed of granite rib formations. The design balances elegance and delicacy—reminiscent of the beautiful tea house that graces the island—with durability and strength, much like the granite that forms the island itself. Interestingly, Fannette Island has held multiple names over the past 100 years, including Coquette, Baranoff, Dead Man's, Hermit's, and Emerald Isle, though Fannette is the name that has prevailed.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This knitting pattern employs ribbed stitch work as a primary design element. The rib stitch construction creates the visual texture and structural integrity that defines this cowl. The ribbed pattern is what gives the design its characteristic appearance while contributing to the garment's elegant yet durable nature.
