Farfallina Shawl by Maryna Radzko
What is Being Made
The Farfallina shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Maryna Radzko. The name Farfallina is Italian, meaning "small butterfly," referencing the butterfly-shaped decorative elements characteristic of this design. The sample shawl measures 180 x 57 cm (71 x 22 ½ inches), though the finished size is customizable based on individual gauge and pattern repeats.
Knitting Techniques
This shawl is constructed using lace knitting techniques, a hallmark of intermediate-level projects. The design features charted lace patterns that create the distinctive butterfly motifs. The pattern allows for customization of the final shawl size by working the main chart (Chart 2) fewer or more times than the five repeats used in the sample version. Gauge flexibility is built into the design, as the finished measurements will vary based on individual knitter tension and yarn choice, making this an accessible project for knitters developing their lace skills.
Stitches and Pattern Elements
The Farfallina shawl utilizes charted lace stitches to create its butterfly-inspired pattern. The design is worked in repeating chart sections, with Chart 2 serving as the primary pattern repeat that can be adjusted to achieve desired finished dimensions. The lace construction creates an open, decorative fabric suitable for a lightweight shawl.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
A laceweight yarn is recommended for this project, with specifications of approximately 600–1000 meters (660–1100 yards) per 100 grams. The sample shawl was knitted using Artesano Alpaca Silk Lace yarn, which provides 400 meters (437 yards) per 50 grams. The sample required 65 grams of yarn, though yardage needs may vary based on individual gauge and size adjustments. US2 (3.25 mm) needles were used for the sample, though needle size should be selected to create fabric that is neither too dense nor too open, allowing the lace pattern to display properly.
