Product Description

One of the highlights of living here in Shetland is the wonderful wildlife we see. A favourite pastime is to watch the wonderful marine life around these shores. We frequently see seals, dolphins, humpbacks and porpoise plus orca. It is such a special sight seeing them in their natural habitat. There are several active pods of Orca which visit frequently to these shores and each pod is identified by their markings and by their ‘flukes’ or tail lobes. For these cowls I have tried to picture the flukes rising from the water. They are knitted in Jamieson’s of Shetland Chunky Marl. 2/3 of a ball will be sufficient for the smaller cowl and the larger one takes just over one ball. (2 balls are ample to make both if done in the same shade)

They are knitted on 6.5mm needles so whip up quickly – ideal for last minute gifting or if it suddenly turns chilly! The large cowl is long enough to wear doubled over but looks equally good draped around neck and fastened with a pretty pin!

Fluke Cowl by Olach Designs

Project Overview

The Fluke cowl is a knitted neck accessory inspired by the natural beauty of Shetland's marine wildlife. Designed by Olach Designs, this cowl takes its name from the distinctive tail flukes of orca pods that frequent the waters around Shetland. The design captures the visual imagery of flukes rising from the water, translating this inspiration into a wearable knitted piece. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters the opportunity to create a meaningful accessory while celebrating the region's iconic ocean life.

What You Will Make

This pattern includes instructions for two cowl sizes: a smaller cowl and a larger cowl. Both are designed as neck wraps that offer versatility in styling. The smaller cowl is a quick project, while the larger cowl is long enough to wear doubled over the neck or draped around the neck and fastened with a decorative pin. These cowls work well as gifts or as quick projects for sudden cold weather.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Fluke cowls are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters. The pattern utilizes straightforward knitting methods that allow the piece to come together quickly on larger needles. The design is worked in a way that emphasizes the visual flukes motif while maintaining accessibility for those new to knitting.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern instructions, the cowls employ classic knitting stitches suitable for chunky yarn work. The stitch selection complements the chunky yarn weight and contributes to the cowl's drape and visual appeal.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Jamieson's of Shetland Chunky Marl
  • Yardage for smaller cowl: Approximately 2/3 of one ball
  • Yardage for larger cowl: Just over one ball
  • Yardage for both cowls: 2 balls are ample if made in the same shade
  • Needles: 6.5mm needles

Why Choose Chunky Yarn

The chunky yarn weight is a defining feature of this pattern. Chunky yarn creates fabric quickly, making these cowls ideal for last-minute gifting or when you need a cozy neck accessory fast. The 6.5mm needles work efficiently with the chunky Jamieson's of Shetland Chunky Marl, allowing the cowls to be completed in minimal time while still producing a quality, professional-looking finished piece.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner knitting project, the Fluke cowl is accessible to knitters who are new to the craft. The straightforward construction, combined with the quick-working chunky yarn, makes this an excellent choice for building confidence and completing a satisfying project without extensive knitting experience.

Design Inspiration

The Fluke cowl draws inspiration from the orca pods that visit Shetland's waters. Each pod is identified by distinctive markings and the unique shape of their flukes, or tail lobes. The designer has captured this natural imagery in knitted form, creating a piece that honors the region's remarkable marine wildlife while serving as a practical and beautiful accessory.
