What Is Being Made
The Forget-me-not Bonnet is a classic knitted baby bonnet designed by Lisa Chemery. This is a fitted head covering created specifically for infants and toddlers, with five size options ranging from newborn (0-3 months) through early childhood (2-5 years). The bonnet features a structured design with negative ease built in for an optimal, secure fit. The finished bonnet measures approximately 8.75 to 13.25 inches across the front (jaw-to-jaw across the forehead) depending on size selected, with a depth ranging from 6 to 8 inches.
Techniques and Construction
This knitting pattern employs intermediate-level techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills and experience. The bonnet is constructed using sport weight yarn, which creates a delicate, refined fabric appropriate for baby garments. The pattern is designed to be worked flat or in the round depending on the knitter's preference and skill level, with careful attention to shaping and fit throughout the construction process. The design incorporates negative ease, a technique where the finished measurements are slightly smaller than the intended head circumference, ensuring the bonnet stays securely in place on a baby's head.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the Forget-me-not Bonnet utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for creating a structured, fitted bonnet. The pattern is designed to work with sport weight yarn and creates a finished fabric with enough structure to maintain the bonnet's shape while remaining soft and comfortable for delicate baby skin.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for approximately 90 to 130 yards of sport weight yarn, depending on the size being knitted. The bonnet is shown in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, a luxury yarn blend consisting of 55% wool, 33% microfiber, and 12% cashmere. This yarn is available in 50-gram balls with a yardage of 137 yards per ball. The sample photographed features the colorway Duck Egg in the 6-12 month size and Silver in the 12-24 month size.
Knitters may substitute other sport weight yarns of similar characteristics, though Lisa Chemery notes that yarn weight substitution will affect row gauge and therefore the total depth of the finished bonnet. Care should be taken when selecting alternative yarns to ensure the final garment maintains proper proportions and fit for the intended wearer.
