Product Description
I love the colour of this yarn. It is a perfect match for the colours in my lounge. So I designed a motif with which to make a cushion cover, so it could adorn the sofa. Imagine snuggling on the sofa with this cushion….pure bliss! The cover is made from 36 motifs, 16 on the front and an ‘envelope’ finish on the back using 20 motifs. The motifs are designed to join as you go and would be lovely in a blanket or even in a scarf. I used 4 ply/fingering yarn and each motif used less than 20m of yarn. The whole cushion used about 150g/600m. Each motif is approx 10cm/4" square and the finished cushion approx 40cm/16" square. Instructions are in English and US crochet terms and there is a chart for the motif and a schematic for the cushion.
Fresh Red Crochet Cushion by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Fresh Red Crochet Cushion is a decorative cushion cover designed by Agrarian Artisan, featuring a vibrant red colorway that complements modern lounge décor. The cushion cover is constructed from 36 individual crochet motifs: 16 motifs form the front panel, while 20 motifs create an envelope-style closure on the back. The modular motif design allows the finished piece to be used not only as a cushion cover but also adapted for blankets or scarves.
Construction and Techniques
This intermediate-level project uses the join-as-you-go technique, meaning motifs are connected during construction rather than assembled afterward. This method streamlines the building process and creates a seamless, integrated fabric. The envelope finish on the back provides a practical closure system that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Each individual motif requires less than 20 meters of yarn, making this an efficient project in terms of yardage. The modular nature of the motifs means crafters can work on portable, manageable pieces that are ideal for on-the-go projects.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a range of fundamental crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch for starting rows and creating spaces
- Single crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch for dense fabric
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch for balanced fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – a versatile stitch used throughout the motifs
- Treble (tr) – a tall stitch that adds height and openness to the design
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining motifs and finishing edges
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project is worked in 4 ply yarn (also known as fingering weight), a lightweight yarn that creates fine, detailed stitches and a refined finished fabric. The pattern specifically references the designer's choice of red yarn, which was selected to coordinate with existing home décor. Standard crochet hooks appropriate for 4 ply yarn are required, though the pattern does not specify an exact hook size in the provided content.
Pattern Notes
The pattern includes standard crochet abbreviations and symbols for both UK and US crochet terminology, acknowledging the differences between these two conventions. Crafters are advised to read through the entire pattern before beginning work to ensure understanding of all techniques and construction methods.
