Product Description
This is a pattern for a knit shawl hat features two lace stitches that come to us from Japan. Both are interesting and fun to knit. One is a distinct lace stitch and the other is a “lace-bobble” stitch. Together, the two stitches make a unique and beautiful shawl. The stitches, although they are Japanese, are easily learned by Western knitters, especially those who love knitting lace. All symbols have been “translated” to the ones that most Americans are used to seeing.
All stitches are charted only.
The crochet hook method of making bobbles (nupps) is included in the pattern, as are the instructions for an optional crocheted edging.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a good working knowledge of lace knitting.)
This pattern was displayed at the 2019 January’s Winter TNNA convention.
Any sport weight or heavy weight fingering yarn will work for this pattern
Futano Bobble and Lace Shawl by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Futano Bobble and Lace Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted wrap that showcases the elegant combination of two distinct Japanese stitches. Designed by Linda Lehman, this shawl demonstrates how traditional Japanese knitting techniques can be successfully adapted for Western knitters. Despite its visually intricate appearance, the design is approachable for knitters with foundational lace knitting experience who are ready to expand their stitch repertoire.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a rectangular wrap shawl measuring approximately 22 inches by 72 inches. The shawl features a main body worked in knitting, complemented by a crocheted edging that frames the finished piece. The generous dimensions make this shawl versatile for wearing as a shoulder wrap, shawlette, or decorative accessory.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Futano Bobble and Lace Shawl incorporates two Japanese stitch patterns that work in harmony throughout the design. The primary techniques include:
- Japanese Stitches: The shawl features two distinct Japanese knitting stitches that create visual interest and texture. While these stitches may be unfamiliar to many American knitters, they are designed to be learnable, particularly for those with existing lace knitting knowledge.
- Lace Knitting: The construction relies on lace knitting fundamentals, including yarn overs and decreases that create openwork patterns and visual lightness throughout the fabric.
- Bobble Details: Bobble stitches add dimensional texture and tactile interest to the shawl's surface, contrasting with the delicate lace elements.
- Crocheted Edging: The finished shawl is bordered with a crocheted edging that provides structure and a polished finish to the wrap.
Materials and Tools Required
For the Main Shawl Body: The project requires 1000 to 1200 yards of sport weight yarn, worked on U.S. size #5 (4mm) knitting needles. An additional spare size #5 needle and a tapestry needle are needed for finishing and weaving in ends.
For the Crocheted Edging: Approximately 100 yards of the same or a coordinating yarn is used with size H and size I crochet hooks to complete the border.
Gauge: The pattern specifies approximately 5 stitches per inch when worked in the pattern stitch and aggressively blocked for lace. However, the gauge is noted as non-critical for this garment, offering flexibility for individual knitter preferences and yarn variations.
Skill Level and Knitter Requirements
This shawl is rated as intermediate difficulty, with the assumption that knitters possess foundational knowledge of lace knitting techniques. The pattern introduces Japanese stitch methods that expand beyond typical American knitting instruction, making it an excellent project for experienced lace knitters seeking to develop new skills and explore international knitting traditions.
