Product Description

This is a fun, stranded colourwork hat inspired by my sons geodes that he has collected. I love the geometric fragments in a geode, so I tried to replicate a pattern in a hat. I used DK weight, Union Fibre C1, Madeline Tosh C2. I recommend using one solid and one variegated yarn. Make sure these are well contrasted. Approximately 100g total. Needle Size: 3.5mm Circulars and 4mm Circulars. This hat is knit in the round using a magic loop method or you can knit on dpns if you prefer. Gauge: 12 stitches and 12 rows = 5 cm in Stocking stitch on 4mm needles. Yardage: 219 - 225 yards (200 - 206 m) Notions: Darning needle for weaving in ends Scissors Tape measure Stitch markers Size: Adults one size

Geode Hat by Rachy Knits

What Is Being Made

The Geode Hat is an adult-sized knitted hat designed by Rachel Kleynhans of Rachy Knits. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat using a two-color knitting technique that produces a visually striking geode-inspired pattern. The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up, resulting in a seamless construction ideal for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The hat is knit in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless finished garment. Knitters can choose between the magic loop method or double-pointed needles (dpns) for working in the round, offering flexibility based on personal preference and experience level.

The construction begins with a long tail cast-on of 112 stitches, establishing a secure foundation edge. The pattern incorporates color work using two contrasting yarns throughout the design, creating the distinctive geode aesthetic. Rachy Knits recommends combining one solid-colored yarn with one variegated or semi-solid yarn to enhance the visual interest of the finished hat.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in ribbed sections for texture and elasticity
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used for shaping the crown
  • Ribbing (k1, p1) – creates the elastic cuff at the hat's base
  • Stocking stitch – the primary stitch pattern creating smooth fabric

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 skeins of contrasting DK weight yarn, totaling approximately 100 grams and 219–225 yards (200–206 meters). Rachy Knits used Union Fibre C1 and Madeline Tosh C2 in the original design, demonstrating the effectiveness of pairing a solid yarn with a variegated or semi-solid option.

Needles: Knitters will need both 3.5mm and 4mm circular needles to complete this project. The smaller needles are used for the ribbed cuff, while the larger needles accommodate the main body of the hat. The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 12 rows equaling 5 centimeters in stocking stitch on 4mm needles, making gauge checking essential for proper fit.

Additional Notions: A darning needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and stitch markers round out the required tools. Stitch markers help track the beginning of each round and any pattern repeats throughout the construction.

Pattern Overview

The Geode Hat begins with a cast-on of 112 stitches using 3.5mm circular needles in the primary color, worked in the round using either the magic loop method or dpns. The pattern starts with ribbing (k1, p1) to create an elastic cuff, then transitions to 4mm needles for the main body worked in stocking stitch. The two-color design is incorporated throughout, and the crown is shaped using decrease stitches like k2tog to gradually reduce stitches until the hat is complete. This one-size design accommodates most adult head measurements.
