GIULIANA Elegant Silk Jumper
What is Being Made
GIULIANA is an elegant silk jumper designed by domoras.com as a downloadable knitting pattern. This garment is a refined T-shirt style jumper worked primarily in the round, featuring long sleeves and a sophisticated silhouette with optional waist shaping. The design emphasizes delicate decorative striping throughout the piece, creating visual interest while maintaining an elegant aesthetic suitable for intermediate knitters.
Construction Technique
The GIULIANA jumper employs a top-down construction method, worked in rounds until the armholes are reached. This technique allows for seamless construction and easy customization of length before shaping begins. The body is worked continuously in the round, which reduces finishing work and creates a smooth, professional appearance. The long sleeves are slightly shortened compared to standard proportions, contributing to the contemporary silhouette of this design.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch structure features stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the main fabric throughout most of the jumper. The borders of the garment are worked in garter stitch, providing a defined frame and textural contrast to the smooth stockinette body. Fine decorative stripes are incorporated throughout the design, adding visual sophistication and pattern interest. The gauge is worked at 26 stitches and 38 rows over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in stocking stitch on 3 mm needles after washing, ensuring proper fabric drape and structure.
Yarn and Material Options
GIULIANA is designed to showcase luxurious silk and silk-blend yarns in 4-ply weight. The pattern provides multiple yarn alternatives to suit different preferences and availability:
- Habu 2/17 Tsumugi N-85 – worked with 2 strands for the appropriate weight
- ITO Kinu – worked with 2 strands
- Knit One Crochet Too silk/cotton blend – offering a practical alternative
For those preferring cotton alternatives, suitable options include Schachenmayr Catania Fine, Sirdar Cotton 4 Ply, Wendy Supreme Cotton 4 Ply, and King Cole Bamboo Cotton 4 Ply. These alternatives maintain the 4-ply weight specification while offering different fiber characteristics and care requirements.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires circular needles or double-pointed needles in sizes 2½ mm and 3 mm. The smaller needles (2½ mm) are typically used for ribbed borders and cuffs to create elasticity, while the larger needles (3 mm) are used for the main body fabric worked in stocking stitch. Circular needles are recommended for working in rounds, though double-pointed needles may be substituted according to knitter preference.
Customization and Fit
The GIULIANA pattern offers flexibility in garment length, allowing knitters to adjust the finished length before beginning the waist shaping. Optional waist shaping provides the opportunity to create a more fitted silhouette or maintain a straighter cut depending on personal preference and desired fit. Tension adjustment guidance is provided: if the fabric appears too slack, finer needles should be used; if the fabric appears too firm, larger needles should be substituted.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the GIULIANA jumper is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, stocking stitch, and basic garment construction. The round-by-round construction and decorative striping elements require attention to pattern detail and consistency, making this an appropriate project for developing knitters seeking to expand their garment-making capabilities.
