Product Description
Granitoid is a triangular shawlette worked from the top down. Textured short rows create the body of the shawl and a simple looping edging is worked on the live stitches to complete the shawl.
Shawl can easily be made smaller or larger by changing the number of stitches cast on. Note that, due to the nature of the stitch pattern, Granitoid will grow wider faster than it grows deeper with increased stitch numbers.
Granitoid Triangular Shawlette by Allison Janocha
What Is Being Made
Granitoid is a triangular shawlette designed by Allison Janocha, worked from the top down. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a versatile accessory with finished dimensions of 12.5 inches deep by 27 inches wide (31.75 centimeters deep by 68.5 centimeters wide). The shawlette can be customized by adjusting the finished size through adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of three, making it adaptable to personal preferences and yarn availability.
Construction and Techniques
The Granitoid shawlette employs a top-down construction method, beginning with a cast-on edge and working downward to create the triangular shape. The primary structural technique used throughout the body of the shawl is textured short rows, which create visual interest and dimension in the fabric. This short-row shaping allows the designer to achieve the triangular silhouette while building texture into the piece. Once the main body is complete, a simple looping edging is worked directly on the live stitches remaining on the needles, providing a finished edge without requiring a separate bind-off step.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. Key stitch abbreviations include yarn over (yo), which creates decorative eyelet holes and lace elements. The combination of textured stitches with yarn overs contributes to the visual character of the finished shawl. Specific gauge information and complete stitch instructions are provided within the pattern, with a dedicated gauge swatch section included for knitters to verify their tension before beginning the main project.
Yarn and Materials
Granitoid is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 370 yards (340 meters) of yarn total. The pattern is compatible with wool or wool-blend yarns, offering flexibility in fiber content selection. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Yarn Love Marie Antoinette, a luxury blend consisting of 80% merino, 10% stellina, and 10% cashmere, which provides softness and subtle sparkle to the finished shawlette.
Needles and Notions
- US Size 7 (4.5 millimeter) circular needles, or the size required to achieve the specified gauge
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Blocking supplies for finishing and shaping the completed shawlette
