Product Description

I designed this vest with my son in mind who loves clothes and has a fondness for sweater vests. The all over ribbing pattern and Diamond panel detail is worked on the right side of the fabric only so the purl sides are all rest rows!

Grey Matter is worked flat in pieces. The vest features a diamond panel on the front and back that meets at one shoulder. The shoulders are shaped with short rows and are seamed with a 3 needle bind off. The neckline and sleeves are finished with a narrow band of 1x1 ribbing. Side seams are finished with mattress stitch

Grey Matter Knit Waistcoat by SashkaKnits

What Is Being Made

Grey Matter is an intermediate-level knitted waistcoat (vest) designed by Sashka Macievich. This sleeveless garment is crafted to fit a range of sizes from 36 to 54 inches at the chest underarm, with finished lengths between 27 and 27½ inches. The waistcoat offers a fitted silhouette suitable for layering and everyday wear, available in ten different size options to accommodate various body measurements.

Knitting Techniques

The Grey Matter waistcoat employs several essential knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level maker. The construction begins with ribbed sections created using smaller needles to establish structure and elasticity at key points. The main body is worked in a Modified Ribbing Stitch, which creates texture and visual interest while maintaining the garment's drape. Seamless construction techniques are utilized, with stitches held on stitch holders or waste yarn at strategic locations including the back neck and shoulders, allowing for neat finishing and professional seaming. The center front features a locking stitch marker or waste yarn to maintain stitch integrity during the knitting process.

Stitches Used

  • Modified Ribbing Stitch: The primary stitch pattern used throughout the main body of the waistcoat, creating texture and structure
  • Ribbing: Used for edgings and cuffs, worked on smaller needles to create elastic, fitted sections
  • Seaming stitches: Applied during finishing to join shoulder and side seams using a yarn needle

Materials and Gauge

The Grey Matter waistcoat is designed to be knitted with Knit Picks Galileo yarn in the colorway Nebula (color number 3158). This sport weight yarn is a blend of 50% Merino Wool and 50% Bamboo, offering breathability and softness. Yardage requirements range from 9 to 13 balls depending on size selected, with each ball containing 131 yards and weighing 50 grams.

Two needle sizes are required for this project: US size 2.5 (3.00mm) needles for the main body knitting, and US size 2 (2.75mm) needles for ribbed sections. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 28 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the Modified Ribbing Stitch. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Additional materials include stitch markers, stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches, and a yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
