Half & Half Crochet Square by Jessica Phillips
What is Being Made
Half & Half is a colorwork crochet square designed by Jessica Phillips. This beginner-friendly project creates a decorative square featuring a split-color design that showcases color blocking techniques. The finished square measures 4.5 inches wide after round 4, making it suitable for blankets, afghans, or as part of a larger modular crochet project like the Mish Mash cal/kal collection.
Crochet Techniques Used
Color work and tapestry crochet are the primary techniques featured in this design. The pattern demonstrates how to change colors seamlessly within rounds, creating distinct color sections without visible transitions. The designer switches to the starting color on the final stitch of each round to minimize the visibility of color changes, resulting in cleaner edges between color blocks.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – Foundation stitches for starting the square
- Single crochet (sc) – Basic short stitch
- Half double crochet (hdc) – Medium-height stitch
- Double crochet (dc) – Taller stitch used extensively throughout the pattern
- Triple crochet (tr) – Tallest stitch in the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds seamlessly
Materials and Yarn Weight
This project requires 1 to 2 ounces of worsted weight yarn distributed across three colors. The designer used blue (C1), purple (C2), and white (C3) in the sample shown, though crafters can select any color combination. A 5mm (H) size crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends complete the material requirements. The worsted weight yarn and hook size make this an accessible project for beginners while producing a sturdy, well-defined finished square.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated beginner, making it ideal for crocheters new to colorwork techniques. While the pattern introduces color changes and multiple stitches, the straightforward structure and clear stitch progression allow beginners to build confidence with fundamental crochet skills and basic color blocking.
