This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Sirdar provides instructions for four distinct baby and children's hat designs, all worked in Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake Chunky yarn. The pattern covers sizes from birth to 7 years (0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years, 2–3 years, 4–5 years, and 6–7 years), making it a versatile addition to any knitter's collection. Each hat is sized to fit an average baby's or child's head for the age indicated.
All four designs use Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake Chunky, a chunky weight yarn sold in 25g balls. Each hat is shown in a different shade:
In addition to yarn, knitters will need one pair of 5½mm (UK5 / USA9) knitting needles and one pair of 4½mm (UK7 / USA7) knitting needles. Stitch holders are also required for the Helmet and Balaclava designs.
Achieving the correct tension is essential for all four hats. The pattern specifies:
Knitters are advised to check their tension carefully before beginning and to adjust needle size accordingly — using a thinner needle if fewer stitches are produced, or a thicker needle if more stitches appear.
The Helmet is a structured, close-fitting hat design that includes ear flaps for added warmth and coverage. The ear flaps are worked separately and then joined to the main section. Construction begins with a thumb method cast on using 4½mm needles, with stitches picked up and worked across the ear flap sections before continuing the main body of the hat. The main section is worked in stocking stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) on the larger 5½mm needles. Stitches are left on a stitch holder at key shaping points, a technique that allows sections to be rejoined seamlessly later. The helmet silhouette provides full coverage of the ears and neck, making it ideal for newborns and young babies in cold weather.
The Balaclava is the most comprehensive design in the pattern, offering full head, ear, and neck coverage with a face opening. Like the Helmet, it requires stitch holders to manage multiple live stitch sections during construction. It is worked using both needle sizes — the 4½mm needles for ribbed or garter stitch sections and the 5½mm needles for the main stocking stitch fabric. As the largest design in terms of yarn consumption, it requires up to 3 balls of Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake Chunky for the bigger sizes. The balaclava is an excellent project for keeping young children warm during outdoor winter activities.
The Knotted Pull On Hat is a simple, classic beanie-style hat with a playful knotted top finish. This straightforward design is well suited to knitters of varying experience levels and works up quickly in chunky
