Hawberry Sweater by Veronika Cromwell

What is Being Made

The Hawberry Sweater is a beginner-friendly crochet jumper designed as a 3/4 length sleeve pullover. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Veronika Cromwell offers nine size options ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished chest circumferences from 80cm to 162cm. The sweater is constructed with positive ease of 4-5cm for a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for everyday wear.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners while creating a polished finished garment. The construction method relies on working in rows to build the body and sleeves, with careful shaping to achieve a well-fitted silhouette across multiple size ranges. The designer has incorporated thoughtful ease calculations to ensure the sweater drapes comfortably on the body rather than fitting tightly.

Crochet Stitches Used

The Hawberry Sweater utilizes core crochet stitches that form the foundation of beginner-level projects:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains and construction
  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary structural stitch throughout the pattern
  • Single crochet through back loop (sc blo) – employed to create texture and definition in specific sections
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – used in tension measurements and likely in pattern sections for varied stitch height

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Hawberry Sweater pattern calls for WeCrochet Hawthorne Speckle Hand Painted yarn in the colorway Spark (28618). This fingering weight yarn contains 357 yards (327 meters) per 100g ball and is composed of 80% superwash fine highland wool with 20% polyamide for durability and easy care. Yarn requirements range from 4 skeins for the smallest sizes (XS, S) to 8 skeins for the largest sizes (4XL, 5XL), allowing crafters to select the appropriate yardage for their chosen size.

Tools and Notions

Construction of the Hawberry Sweater requires a 4mm crochet hook, which is sized to achieve the specified gauge of 22 half double crochet stitches by 12 rows measuring 10cm x 10cm. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge and Sizing Information

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern's success. The specified tension is 22 hdc by 12 rows over a 10cm x 10cm swatch using a 4mm hook or the size needed to obtain gauge. The pattern accommodates nine distinct sizes with varying finished measurements. Sleeve length is consistent at 3/4 length across all sizes, ranging from 34.5cm in the XS to 39.5cm in the 5XL, while total length increases from 62cm to 67cm across the size range. The model photographed wears a UK size 10-12 with a 96cm chest circumference in the sample size M.
