Hele Knit Shawl by Ashley Knowlton

Project Overview

Hele is an intermediate-level knit shawl design featuring Estonian lace motifs and decorative techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated wrap suitable for draping securely around the shoulders, combining traditional lace construction with contemporary design elements.

What Is Being Made

A triangular lace shawl worked from the top down using four narrow wedges of lace. The finished shawl measures 38 inches in wingspan and 19 inches in depth from the cast-on edge, providing generous coverage for shoulder wear.

Design Features and Motifs

  • Feathered stripes creating flowing vertical lines throughout the design
  • Nupps (decorative bobble stitches characteristic of Estonian knitting) adding dimensional texture
  • Estonian lace motifs providing traditional folk-inspired patterning
  • Four-wedge construction ensuring balanced shaping and secure shoulder fit

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs intermediate-level lace knitting techniques. The construction method uses wedge-based increases to create the triangular shape, with lace patterning integrated throughout. Nupps require wrapping yarn around the needle multiple times and then decreasing those wraps together, a technique common in Estonian lace traditions. Feathered stripe effects are achieved through strategic yarn-over and decrease placement.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern incorporates standard lace stitches including yarn overs for creating openwork, strategic decreases for shaping, and the specialized nupp stitch. Abbreviations and special stitch instructions are provided within the PDF pattern document.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Requirements: 580 yards (530 meters) of fingering weight yarn

Sample Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Serena in colorway 7378 (Tezpi), requiring 3 skeins. This yarn is composed of 60% Baby Alpaca and 40% Pima Cotton, offering a blend of warmth and breathability suitable for a lightweight shawl.

Yarn Weight Note: The sample yarn is labeled as sport/DK weight but actually knits lighter with longer yardage than the label indicates. When substituting yarn, follow the recommended yardage of 580 yards rather than relying solely on skein yardage.

Needles and Notions: US Size 5 (3.75mm) circular needle, minimum 32 inches in length, to accommodate the growing number of stitches during construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques and introduces lace knitting skills. The combination of nupps and feathered lace motifs requires attention to stitch placement and pattern reading.
