Hesperides Triangular Striped Shawl by Tori Gurbisz

What is Being Made

Hesperides is a triangular striped shawl inspired by Greek mythology, specifically named for the goddesses of the sunset and keepers of the Golden Apples. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a stunning accessory featuring bold sunset-inspired colors in a striped design. The shawl is available in two sizes: Small with a 46-inch (116.8 cm) wingspan and 23-inch (58.4 cm) depth, or Large with a 68-inch (172.7 cm) wingspan and 34-inch (86.4 cm) depth, making it versatile for different preferences and occasions.

Techniques and Construction

Hesperides employs a thoughtful construction approach that combines striped colorwork with lacy stitch patterns. The combination of these techniques serves a practical purpose: the striped and lacy stitch pattern helps break up any potential yarn pooling, making this design particularly well-suited for variegated yarns paired with a complementary solid color. The pattern is designed with intermediate knitting skill level in mind, making it accessible to knitters who have progressed beyond basic techniques but may not yet be working on highly complex projects.

Gauge flexibility is built into this pattern design. While a standard gauge of 17 stitches and 28 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch is provided, the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial to the project. Knitters who tend to work tightly or prefer a more open fabric are encouraged to go up one to two needle sizes from the recommended size. Proper blocking and swatch washing are emphasized to ensure satisfaction with the final fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as its foundational gauge reference, combined with lacy stitch elements that create visual interest and texture throughout the triangular shawl. The integration of lace with the striped colorwork creates a balanced design that is both visually striking and structurally sound.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Hesperides is designed to be worked with Malabrigo Sock, a 100% Merino wool yarn that offers both durability and softness. The yarn comes in 440-yard skeins weighing 100 grams.

  • Small size requires approximately 275 yards of main color and contrasting color yarn
  • Large size requires approximately 440 yards of main color and contrasting color yarn

The recommended colorway combination showcases Malabrigo Sock in Violeta Africana as the main color paired with Archangel as the contrasting color, creating the bold sunset aesthetic that inspired the design. The 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weight options provide flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended fabric characteristics.
