What is Being Made

The Hoarfrost Toque is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed to be comfy, cozy, and warm. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic toque style hat suitable for cold weather wear.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The Hoarfrost Toque is an ideal pattern for knitters new to hat construction, offering an accessible introduction to circular knitting and crown decreases while still producing a finished garment with excellent warmth and comfort.

Knitting Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern employs standard knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for beginner-level hat knitting. Construction involves working in the round using circular needles, with decreases worked at the crown to shape the top of the hat. The pattern transitions from circular needles to double-pointed needles (dpn's) during the final decreases when the stitch count becomes too small to work comfortably on the circular needle.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Needles: 5.5mm (US-9) and 6mm (US-10) 16-inch circular knitting needles, plus 6mm (US-10) double-pointed needles for finishing the crown
  • Yarn: Lion Brand Lion's Pride Woolspun Yarn in chunky weight

The chunky yarn weight combined with appropriately sized needles allows for quick project completion while maintaining the structure and warmth needed for a functional winter toque.
