PATTERN & SIZING NOTES:

- For this crochet bardot sweater, you must have knowledge of: working in the BB of the foundation chain, slip stitch, skipping stitches, double crochet, double crochet Moss Stitch and working ribbing on to a piece.

- This crochet off the shoulder top is made as one piece for the body (creating a neck hole as you go) and the sleeves are worked on to the sides. At the end, the ribbed cuffs, bottom hem and neck ribbing is worked directly on to the piece.

- The double crochet Moss Stitch is just like the regular Moss Stitch (AKA Linen or Granite Stitch) except instead of using single crochet you use double crochet.

Holly Sweater by Lulo Stitch Co

Project Overview

The Holly Sweater is an intermediate-level crochet design created by Lulo Stitch Co. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a bardot-style sweater with a relaxed, comfortable fit. The design features a mesh stitch construction that offers considerable stretch, accommodating up to 6 inches of negative ease for a slightly loose silhouette. The pattern is available in nine sizes, ranging from XS to 5XL, making it accessible for various body types and fit preferences.

What Is Being Made

The Holly Sweater is a crochet bardot sweater—a garment characterized by an off-shoulder or wide neckline design. This particular sweater is engineered to provide a relaxed, contemporary fit with intentional negative ease. The mesh stitch construction creates an open, breathable fabric that maintains structure while allowing for significant stretch and movement. The pattern includes detailed sizing information across nine size categories, with finished circumference measurements ranging from 30 inches for XS to 48 inches for 2XL.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Holly Sweater employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques. The pattern utilizes Double Crochet Moss Stitch (DCMS) as a primary stitch, which creates the characteristic mesh texture of the garment. This stitch combines yarn overs and double crochet stitches to produce an open, lacy fabric with excellent drape and stretch properties.

Additional stitches and techniques used throughout the pattern include:

  • Chain (CH) – Used for foundation rows and creating the base structure of the sweater
  • Single Crochet (SC) – Applied for shaping and finishing edges
  • Single Crochet in Back Loop Only (SCBLO) – Creates ribbed texture and defined edges
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (SC2tog) – A decrease technique for shaping the garment
  • Double Crochet (DC) – Used in combination with the moss stitch pattern
  • Slip Stitch (SL ST) – Joins rounds and secures stitches
  • Yarn Over (YO) – Essential component of the mesh stitch construction
  • Skip Stitch (SK ST) – Creates the openwork characteristic of the design

All stitches in this pattern are written using North American crochet terminology, ensuring clarity for crocheters familiar with this standard abbreviation system.

Materials and Specifications

The Holly Sweater pattern calls for DK weight yarn (Category 3), with the sample garment created using Bernat Softee Baby in the Flannel colorway. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 800 yards for the XS size to 1,950 yards for the 5XL size. The pattern specifies a 4mm crochet hook as the primary tool for construction.

Additional materials required for completing the sweater include:

  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
  • Scissors for cutting yarn
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming (if applicable)

Difficulty Level and Pattern Format

Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Holly Sweater requires foundational crochet knowledge and familiarity with standard stitches and shaping techniques. Crocheters should be comfortable working with stitch markers, executing decreases, and managing multiple size variations. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access instructions digitally and print them as needed for reference during construction.
