The finished size is 130cm around by 16cm deep when blocked and requires approx 150m of DK yarn. You can adapt the pattern to suit your required size or even change the yarn weight, some ideas for this are given in the pattern.
Huckleberry Cowl by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Huckleberry Cowl is a versatile knitted neck accessory designed to drape low around the shoulders while remaining long enough to wrap twice around the neck for added warmth. Originally published in 2012 as a shorter version, this remake features an extended length that balances elegant draping with practical layering capability. The cowl is adaptable in length, making it suitable for various styling preferences and climate needs.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses straightforward stocking stitch as its primary fabric construction method. The pattern is written to accommodate two different finished sizes, with instructions for the larger size provided as the main text and smaller size variations noted in brackets throughout. The design's simplicity in stitch work makes it accessible to knitters with foundational skills while remaining engaging through its practical construction and customizable length options.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch — the primary stitch throughout the cowl, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Approximately 150 meters of DK weight yarn. The pattern was worked using 1 skein of Triskelion Yarn's Pryderi DK (100g/200m per skein) in the colorway Cornflower. The original 2012 sample used Debbie Bliss Andes, a blend of 65% baby alpaca and 35% silk (50g/100m), demonstrating the pattern's compatibility with various DK-weight fibers.
Needles and Tools: 5mm circular needles or double-pointed needles, paired with a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern achieves a working tension of 6 stitches to 5 centimeters over stocking stitch, though the designer notes that exact tension is not critical to the success of this design. This flexibility makes the Huckleberry Cowl forgiving for knitters with varying tension characteristics, and the adaptable length means minor gauge variations will not significantly impact the finished garment's wearability.
