Product Description
Creating these hummingbirds is a thankful task in these times of social distancing: hang up these birds all over the house andgo bird watching without even leaving the house!
There are 4 birds in the pattern: thewhite-necked jacobin, ruby topaz, tufted coquetteandlong-tailed-sylph.
These birds make great, colorful hanging ornaments, for your Easter branches, for example!
The birds were knitted on 2.25 mm dpn (UK 13, US 1) with small amounts of yarns (13 m), they are easy, small projects to use up any scraps you have lying around and can be made in an evening or so. Adding a strand of metallic sewing yarn gives the hummingbirds their signature iridescence. Creating these birds asks for some intarsia color work, short row and i-cord knitting and loop stitches (explained in the pattern). The beaks were made with tooth picks and in lace gauge yarn.
Have fun on knitting adventure and your in-house bird watching tour!

The pattern draws inspiration from the fascinating biology and visual characteristics of these extraordinary creatures, which belong to the family Trochilidae with over 360 recognized species. Perfect for crafters seeking a beginner-friendly knitting project, this design captures the essence of hummingbirds through textile art.
About Hummingbirds: Design Inspiration
Hummingbirds are renowned for their unique abilities and stunning appearance. These birds are the only avian species capable of flying backwards, and they produce their distinctive humming sound through rapid wing beats at exceptionally high frequencies. The most captivating feature of hummingbirds is their iridescence—structural colors created by light reflection off microscopic feather surface structures rather than pigmentation alone. While other birds display iridescence, hummingbirds are the most illustrious masters of this optical phenomenon.
Hummingbird species are organized into groups with evocative names including topaz, emerald, bee, coquette, mango, and brilliant. Notable species featured in hummingbird appreciation include the white-necked jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) from the topazes group, the ruby-topaz hummingbird (Chrysolampis mosquitus) from the mangoes group, and the tufted coquette (Lophornis ornatus), a particularly tiny and visually striking species.
