Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Nicole Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed edging, offering an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with experience in basic shaping and stitch techniques.
What is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with a crew neckline and set-in armholes. The pattern includes separate pieces for the back, front, and sleeves that are worked flat and then seamed together. The design features an intarsia chart element, which allows for personalization with initials or a moniker (as referenced in the pattern name "Nicole Moniker Chart").
Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The pattern incorporates intarsia technique, which involves working with multiple colors of yarn to create a design. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color block, preventing bulk on the reverse side of the fabric.
- Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole shaping with decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create a fitted sleeve cap.
- Ribbed Edging: 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) is used for the cuffs and lower edge to provide stretch and a finished appearance.
- Stitch Holder Technique: Stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for later pickup and finishing of neckline edges.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a knit side facing outward.
- 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x2 pattern, used for the lower edge and cuffs to create elasticity.
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used during armhole shaping to reduce stitch counts smoothly.
- Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch sections.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which produces a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body sections worked in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edging. The use of smaller needles for ribbing ensures a tighter, more elastic edge compared to the body fabric.
Yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn type are used. The pattern includes multiple size options, indicated by bracketed measurements throughout the instructions (such as [25:29:29:33] sts), allowing the sweater to be customized for different children's sizes.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized with clear row-by-row instructions for the back and front pieces. The back piece is worked first, establishing the foundation with cast-on stitches and working through the body length before shaping armholes. The front piece follows a similar construction method, with additional shaping details noted at specific row intervals. Sleeve instructions and finishing techniques are referenced within the pattern structure.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the knitter is comfortable with basic shaping techniques, reading charts, and managing multiple colors. The intarsia element requires attention to color placement and careful yarn management, making it suitable for knitters ready to expand beyond simple stitch patterns.
