Jem Cushion by Jem Weston
Project Overview
The Jem Cushion is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by independent designer Jem Weston. This intermediate-level project creates a finished cushion measuring approximately 36cm (14 inches) in width. The design incorporates functional buttonhole details and uses a thoughtful color-blocking approach with multiple yarn shades to create visual interest and texture.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knitted cushion cover with a button band closure. The cushion features strategically placed buttonholes that allow for functional fastening, making it both decorative and practical for home décor. The finished piece is suitable for standard cushion inserts and adds a handmade, artisanal element to any interior space.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St St) – The primary fabric construction technique, creating a smooth, classic knitted surface by alternating knit and purl rows
- Cast On and Cast Off – Used to establish the foundation stitches and secure the edges of the finished piece
- Buttonhole Creation – Executed by casting off stitches on one row and casting them back on in the following row, creating functional openings spaced evenly across the band
- Color Changes – The pattern incorporates yarn transitions to introduce multiple colors throughout the design, adding depth and visual complexity
- Button Band Fold Line – A designated row worked in garter stitch (knit on both sides) to create a structural fold, allowing the band to fold neatly for button closure
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Jem Cushion relies primarily on stockinette stitch, which forms the main fabric body. This stitch creates the characteristic smooth "V" pattern on the right side and horizontal bumps on the wrong side, providing a refined, finished appearance. A garter stitch row is introduced at the button band fold line to create a visible ridge that serves as a functional turning point for the closure band. The buttonhole technique involves strategic stitch manipulation—casting off and recasting stitches—to create evenly spaced, functional openings.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn (light worsted), which provides excellent stitch definition and drape suitable for a cushion cover. The design uses five complementary yarn colors from the Rowan Summerlite DK collection:
- Yarn A – Seashell 466 (1 × 50g ball)
- Yarn B – Favourite Denims 469 (3 × 50g balls)
- Yarn C – Summer 453 (1 × 50g ball)
- Yarn D – Garden 471 (1 × 50g ball)
- Yarn E – Coral Blush 467 (1 × 50g ball)
The pattern requires one pair of 3.25mm (US 3) needles, which are appropriately sized for DK weight yarn and create the correct gauge for the finished cushion dimensions. These needles are standard straight needles suitable for flat, two-directional knitting projects like cushion covers.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving multiple yarn colors, buttonhole construction, and structured shaping. The techniques required—including stitch casting and color changes—are accessible to experienced beginners but offer enough complexity to engage intermediate-level crafters.
