Product Description
Inside the Designer’s MindThe inspiration for Jessie Cable Beanie came from one of my favourite TV series Jessica Jones. During the intro there is a clip of a fence that reminds me of this classic interlocked cable pattern and I thought it would be fun to use this to design a cable beanie that is versatile, easy to wear and can go with many styles. Jessie Cable Beanie has become my go to beanie in the winter because I can wear it with jeans and jacket and also with sportswear. I hope you will enjoy knitting and wearing this classic cable beanie.
Jessie Cable Beanie by Rastus Hsu
What Is Being Made
The Jessie Cable Beanie is a downloadable knitting pattern for a classic winter hat designed by Rastus Hsu. This intermediate-level beanie features a distinctive cable stitch pattern throughout the body, creating texture and visual interest. The finished hat measures approximately 21.5 cm (8.5") in width and 29 cm (11.4") in length, making it a standard adult-sized beanie suitable for everyday wear.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for approximately 78 grams of yarn, equivalent to 195 meters or 214 yards of DK weight wool yarn. The recommended yarn is Donegal Tweed Wool, which is composed of 80% lambswool and 20% nylon, providing durability and warmth. Each 50-gram skein yields 125 meters (137 yards). The pattern includes sample colorways in Everglade (Teal), Ember (Orange), and Quarry (Dark Grey), allowing crafters to choose their preferred shade.
Needles and Tools Required
The Jessie Cable Beanie pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the hat:
- Ribbing section: US 4 (3.5mm) and US 5 (3.75mm) needles, using 40cm (16") circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPN), depending on personal preference for working in the round
- Body section: US 7 (4.5mm) needles, using 40cm (16") circular needles or DPN for working in the round
- Crown decrease section: US 7 (4.5mm) needles, using either a 100cm (40") circular needle for the magic loop method or DPN for working in the round
Additional tools needed include a cable needle for manipulating stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Jessie Cable Beanie employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern begins with ribbing, a textured stitch that provides elasticity and a finished appearance at the hat's edge. The ribbing is worked flat and then unfolded, a technique that creates a neat, professional finish.
The primary stitch used throughout the body of the beanie is cable stitch, which involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like patterns. Cable stitches add both visual texture and structural integrity to the finished garment. The body also incorporates stockinette stitch, a basic knit stitch that creates a smooth, flat surface and serves as the background for the cable pattern.
Working in the round is the primary construction method, allowing the beanie to be knitted seamlessly without requiring seaming. This technique is executed using either circular needles or double-pointed needles, offering flexibility based on knitter preference and comfort.
The crown of the beanie is completed using decrease stitches, which gradually reduce the number of active stitches to shape the top of the hat. The pattern offers the option of using the magic loop method with a longer circular needle for this final shaping section, providing an alternative to traditional double-pointed needles.
Gauge Information
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies two distinct gauges:
- Stockinette stitch gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows equal 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked on US 7 (4.5mm) needles and measured after blocking
- Cable stitch gauge: 26.5 stitches and 34 rows equal 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked on US 7 (4.5mm) needles and measured after blocking
These gauge measurements are taken after blocking, which is the process of wetting and shaping the finished knitted fabric to even out stitches and set the final dimensions.
Pattern Details
This pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF document, version 1.0, dated November 2019. It is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns such as cables. The pattern format allows crafters to download and print the instructions for reference while working.
