Product Description
Graduated stripes of bright color make these fun socks just a touch surreal. Tone them down with neutral colors or spice them up with even brighter ones! This tightly spun superwash merino yarn makes sturdy socks that hold up to wear and tear. The MC fades away as the CC fades in with stripe patterns calculated for each size. Depending on the sizes you choose you may be able to knit two pairs of socks from a single skein.
Construction Notes These socks are knit from the top down with stripes of different colors. You can either carry the yarn or break it and weave in ends between each stripe. I carried the yarn for stripes of 5 rows or less, but wove in ends for wider stripes as carrying the yarn can make a little faux seam. The heel used here is a forked short row heel. It is worked in the same fashion as a standard short row heel. However instead of working down and then up again you will be directed to work down, then up, then down, then up again. This adds a little extra
Jubjub Bird Socks by BeckyinVT
What Is Being Made
The Jubjub Bird socks are a downloadable knitting pattern designed by BeckyinVT for Sugar Tree Designs. These are top-down knit socks available in five graduated sizes: toddler, child/women's small, women's medium, women's large/men's small, and men's large. The sock circumferences range from 5 inches (12.5 cm) for toddlers to 9.75 inches (25 cm) for men's large, with the designer recommending 0.5 to 1 inch (1.5 to 2 cm) of negative ease for an optimal fit.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
These socks are knit in the round using a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and adjust the length to their preference. The pattern features a forked short row heel, a precise shaping technique that creates a well-fitted heel cup without the need for traditional heel flaps or gussets. This construction method is particularly valued for its comfort and custom fit.
A distinctive design element of the Jubjub Bird socks is the carefully calculated stripe pattern that features the main color (MC) fading away as the contrasting color (CC) fades in. The stripe calculations are customized for each of the five sizes, ensuring that the color transitions work harmoniously regardless of which size you choose to knit. This thoughtful design approach means that knitters working different sizes will achieve balanced, intentional color effects rather than arbitrary stripe placement.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Jubjub Bird socks are worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. Stockinette stitch is achieved by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side when working flat, or simply knitting every round when working in the round as these socks are constructed. The pattern's gauge is 26 stitches and 38 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square in stockinette stitch, which is typical for sport weight yarn and creates a fabric with good structure and durability.
Yarn and Materials
The Jubjub Bird socks are designed to be knit using Periwinkle Sheep Merino Sport yarn, a sport weight yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. Superwash merino is specially treated to be machine washable, making it ideal for everyday socks that need frequent laundering. This yarn is tightly spun, which the pattern notes creates sturdy socks that hold up well to regular wear and tear—an important quality for a garment that experiences significant friction and stress.
Yardage requirements vary by size. The main color (MC) requires 48 yards for toddler size up to 205 yards for men's large. The contrasting color (CC) requires 68 yards for toddler size up to 283 yards for men's large. The pattern specifies that one skein of Periwinkle Sheep Merino Sport (270 yards per 100 grams) in the main color is sufficient for all sizes, with additional skeins of the contrasting color needed depending on the size being knit: 1 skein for sizes toddler through women's large/men's small, and 2 skeins for men's large.
Knitters will need US 2 (2.75 mm) needles for working in the round. These small needles are appropriate for the sport weight yarn and the desired gauge, and they are sized to accommodate the small circumferences required for sock knitting. Needles suitable for small circumference knitting in the round—such as double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop needles—are all viable options for this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The intermediate classification reflects the skills required: knitting in the round, managing color changes and stripe patterns, and executing a forked short row heel, which requires understanding short row shaping techniques. Knitters comfortable with basic sock construction and willing to follow detailed instructions for the heel shaping will find this pattern manageable and rewarding.
