Product Description
Grab your rain boots! It’s time to revert to simpler times and playfully jump in puddles. Remember that joy you’d feel watching the ripples of water with each splash you made?
Worked in the round, Jumping in Puddles contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.
Jumping in Puddles Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What is Being Made
Jumping in Puddles is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by rhyFlower Knits. This project creates a pair of socks with finished circumference measurements ranging from 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 centimeters) around the ball of the foot, accommodating multiple sizes. The pattern is available in a toe-up construction method, making it accessible for knitters who prefer starting from the toe and working toward the cuff.
Skill Level and Difficulty
Rated as an Easy skill level, Jumping in Puddles is designed for beginner knitters. The straightforward construction and basic techniques make this an excellent introductory sock pattern for those new to sock knitting.
Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques essential to sock construction. The toe-up method begins at the toe and progresses upward, allowing knitters to try on the sock as they work and adjust leg length as needed. The pattern incorporates cable techniques, including left-leaning cables (LC) and right-leaning cables (RC), which add visual interest and texture to the finished socks. Decreasing stitches is used to shape the sock throughout construction.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern uses the following cable stitches:
- 1/2 LC (Left Cable): Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front; knit 2 stitches; knit 1 stitch from cable needle.
- 1/2 RC (Right Cable): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back; knit 1 stitch; knit 2 stitches from cable needle.
- Dec (Decrease): Used to shape the sock structure.
Yarn and Materials
Jumping in Puddles requires 200 to 500 yards of fingering weight yarn, depending on foot length and desired leg height. The suggested yarn is Turtlepurl Yarns Striped Turtle Toes, a blend of 75% superwash merino and 25% nylon, available in 450-yard (411-meter) skeins weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The nylon content provides durability and elasticity for sock wear.
The pattern calls for US1 (2.25 millimeter) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for working cable stitches, scrap yarn for provisional cast-ons or stitch holders, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches per inch, which is typical for fingering weight yarn on US1 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished sock circumference.
Pattern Features
The sample shown in the pattern was knit using the toe-up version on 64 stitches. The pattern provides seven different size options to accommodate various foot circumferences, making it versatile for different knitters. The inclusion of cable stitches adds decorative texture while remaining manageable for beginner-level knitters.
