Just Another Ribbed Beanie by Siobhan Auger-Deal
What is Being Made
The Just Another Ribbed Beanie is a crochet hat designed by Siobhan Auger-Deal of ShivMatic Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a straightforward approach to creating a classic ribbed beanie suitable for everyday wear. The pattern includes three adult sizing options: Small (19-20.5 inches / 48-52 cm), Medium (21-22.5 inches / 53-57 cm), and Large (23-24 inches / 58-61 cm) to accommodate various head circumferences.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern emphasizes the back loop technique, which creates the distinctive ribbed texture characteristic of this hat style. The back loop method involves working through only the back loop of each stitch rather than under both loops, producing vertical ridges that give the beanie its signature appearance. The designer notes that the pattern is intentionally easy to follow, making it accessible for anyone new to crochet who wants to create a professional-looking ribbed beanie. Additionally, the pattern is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing crafters to easily modify the hat's height or width to achieve a custom fit.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH) – used to establish the foundation of the pattern
- Back Loop Single Crochet (BLsc) – creates ribbed texture through back loop insertion
- Back Loop Half Double Crochet (BLhdc) – provides ribbed texture with additional height
- Single Crochet (SC) – standard stitch for construction
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – standard stitch for construction
Materials and Yarn
The Just Another Ribbed Beanie pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with approximately 130-175 yards required depending on the chosen size. The pattern specifically recommends Lion Brand Wool-Ease (a medium worsted weight yarn composed of 80% acrylic and 20% wool, offering 197 yards per 3-ounce ball), though any worsted weight yarn that matches the specified gauge will work equally well. Crafters will need a US 10 / 6 mm crochet hook to achieve proper gauge, along with basic finishing tools including a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.
