Line of Duty Kate Fleming Chocolate Cover or 17cm Toy

What is Being Made

This is a knitted doll pattern inspired by the character Kate Fleming from Line of Duty. The finished piece can be used as a chocolate cover or as a standalone 17 centimeter stuffed toy. The design captures the character through color blocking and simple construction techniques suitable for beginners.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern is designed for beginner-level knitters, making it an accessible introduction to three-dimensional toy construction through flat knitting pieces that are shaped and assembled.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches to create the doll's structure:

  • Stocking stitch (abbreviated st st) – created by alternating knit rows with purl rows, producing a smooth, classic fabric used for the majority of the body and head sections
  • Garter stitch (abbreviated gs) – created by knitting every row, producing a textured, ridged fabric used for color transition sections
  • Knit stitch (abbreviated k) – the fundamental loop-forming stitch
  • Purl stitch (abbreviated p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination to create stocking stitch
  • Increases (abbreviated inc) – adding stitches to expand the fabric width, used extensively to shape the head and body
  • Decreases (abbreviated dec and k2tog) – reducing stitches to shape and taper sections, particularly for shoulders and head shaping
  • Bind and tie (abbreviated B and T) – a finishing technique using a tapestry needle to thread yarn through live stitches, draw them closed, and secure the ends

Construction Techniques

The doll is constructed using color blocking, where different colored yarn sections create distinct visual areas representing the character's features and clothing. The body begins with a cast-on of 25 stitches, immediately increased to 50 stitches in the first row to create width. The pattern uses strategic increases and decreases to shape the torso, shoulders, and head without requiring complex shaping methods. Yarn color changes mark transitions between body sections: blue for the initial body, green for a transition band using garter stitch, beige for the head, and additional colors (brown, black, and grey) for facial features and details.

Materials Required

This pattern requires minimal materials, making it economical and accessible:

  • Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
  • Yarn: Double knitting weight wool in multiple colors – blue, green, beige, brown, black, and grey. Only small oddments (leftover yarn scraps) are needed for each color, making this an excellent stash-busting project
  • Stuffing: A small amount of polyester fiberfill or similar toy stuffing to give the finished doll its three-dimensional form
  • Additional tools: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and executing the bind and tie finishing technique

Pattern Abbreviations Reference

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations to provide concise instructions: inc (increase), dec (decrease), k (knit), p (purl), sl (slip), st st (stocking stitch), tog (together), gs (garter stitch), B and T (bind and tie), alt (alternate).
