Product Description
This is a pattern for a very “long wingspan” crescent shaped shawl. It is knit in the Estonian fashion and features a gathered stitch, which is easily learned. The shawl measures 68 inches at the widest points across the top and is 24 inches deep at the deepest point. The shawl was knit using a very light weight fingering yarn, and is knit using a U.S size #5 needle.
The weight and width of shawl enables you to wear it in many different ways. It is an excellent introductory pattern into Estonian knitting.
The stitches are both charted and written out line by line.
Skill Level: Intermediate - Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
Any light weight fingering yarn or heavy lace weight yarn will work for this pattern
La Paz Estonian Shawl by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The La Paz Estonian Shawl is a long wingspan wrap designed for versatile wearing options. This knitted shawl features a generous wingspan that allows multiple styling possibilities, making it a highly adaptable accessory for any wardrobe. The design emphasizes both functionality and decorative detail, combining practical drape with intricate lace elements.
Design and Stitch Techniques
This intermediate+ level knitting project showcases authentic Estonian knitting traditions. The shawl features two key Estonian-inspired elements: a distinctive lace stitch that highlights the bottom edge and a focal stitch that incorporates one of Estonia's famous stitch-gathering techniques. These traditional methods add both visual interest and an educational component to the knitting experience, allowing crafters to learn authentic techniques while creating a wearable garment.
The design incorporates yarn overs (yo's) as a core technique, which are essential for creating the lace pattern throughout the shawl. The stitch work includes stockinette stitch as the base gauge reference, with the lace elements creating textural contrast and visual depth.
Skill Level and Requirements
Rated as Intermediate+, this project assumes solid foundational knitting knowledge including proficiency with knitting, purling, and yarn overs. Crafters should be comfortable reading stitch patterns and managing lace work before beginning this project.
