Product Description
The western larch can be found in the valleys and lower slopes of BC’s Southern Interior. This large, handsome tree is often found on the fire blackened soil left after a severe wildfire. Its wood, one of the strongest in Western Canada, is often used for heavy construction and railways.
Worked in your favorite solid, or four coordinating colours, this squishy, textured hat is the perfect stash-buster project!

What is Being Made
The Larch Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern for a textured, squishy hat inspired by the western larch tree found in British Columbia's Southern Interior. This design works equally well as a solid-colored project or as a multi-color stash buster using four coordinating yarn colors. The pattern is offered in three sizes to fit child, adult small/medium, and adult large/extra-large head circumferences.

Techniques and Stitches Used
This beginner-level knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for newer crafters. The primary stitches include knit (k) and knit into front and back of same stitch (kfb), which creates increases for shaping. The textured, squishy quality of the finished hat comes from the stitch pattern construction, making it an ideal beginner project for learning basic shaping while creating a practical, wearable garment.
Materials Required
The Larch Hat is designed to work with worsted weight yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size and color choice:
- Single color version: 35–55 yards / 30–50 meters total (15–25g), depending on size
- Four-color version: 35–55 yards / 30–50 meters per color (Colors A through D), with yardage adjusted based on which size you knit
The pattern was tested and shown in Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 Heathers, a 100% wool, plied yarn available at 220 yards / 200 meters per 100g skein. Additional notions required include stitch markers and a darning needle for finishing.
