Product Description
With a design reminiscent of the country’s traditional colourwork and a colour palette based on the shades that dominate its rolling landscapes, these Iceland-inspired mittens are an essential addition to every winter wardrobe. Plus, with the cosy, plump fabric you get from using an aran weight yarn, you’ll be sure to feel as ready for an Icelandic winter as you look.
And don’t worry if that cold snap suddenly appears without warning - these can be knit up super quick! Designed for magic loop, each mitten is cast on at the cuff and knit down the hand, increasing to create thumb stitches (which you will place on scrap yarn and come back to at the end) and decreasing to close the fingertips. The colourwork along the way is simple and intuitive, with just a four-stitch repeat so there are no long floats to deal with
Laugar Mittens by WoolGatherer Designs
What Is Being Made
Laugar mittens are Iceland-inspired winter mittens designed for adults in three sizes: Small (to fit 3" palm width), Medium (3.5" palm width), and Large (4" palm width). These mittens feature traditional Icelandic colourwork patterns inspired by the country's rolling landscapes, making them both functional winter wear and a visually striking accessory that captures the aesthetic of Nordic knitwear.
Design and Construction Method
The mittens are designed for the magic loop knitting technique, allowing you to knit both mittens simultaneously on a single circular needle. Each mitten is cast on at the cuff and knit downward toward the fingertips. The construction uses an intuitive approach to shaping: stitches are increased to create a dedicated thumb section, which is temporarily placed on scrap yarn and completed after the main hand is finished. The hand closes with strategic decreases at the fingertips to create a fitted finish.
Colourwork and Stitch Techniques
The colourwork pattern features a simple four-stitch repeat throughout, making it accessible and straightforward to follow despite the advanced difficulty rating. This minimal repeat design eliminates the challenge of managing long floats (the stranded yarn carried across the back of colorwork), which keeps the fabric smooth and prevents bulky spots on the inside of the mittens. The stranded colorwork technique uses a palette based on authentic Icelandic landscape shades, creating traditional-looking mittens without requiring complex stitch manipulation.
Yarn and Materials
Laugar mittens are worked in aran weight yarn, which produces a plump, cosy fabric with excellent insulation properties ideal for cold weather protection. The aran weight contributes to quick knitting progress, allowing these mittens to be completed rapidly despite their detailed colorwork. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, compatible with magic loop circular needles suitable for aran weight yarn.
Why Advanced Difficulty
While the four-stitch colorwork repeat is intuitive, the advanced rating reflects the combination of skills required: managing two-color stranded knitting, executing increases and decreases for shaping, working in the round using the magic loop method, and coordinating multiple pattern elements simultaneously. Knitters experienced with colorwork and circular needle techniques will find these mittens a rewarding project.
