Leon is a pocket sized lion, so you can carry the king of the jungle with you on your adventures. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the lion is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). Leon’s mane is made by knitting a skull cap of knitted loops, and instructions how to knit a loop are included in the pattern. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitting loops, and seaming to finish.
Leon the Lion is a pocket-sized knitted toy lion designed by Amanda Berry. This downloadable knitting pattern allows crafters to create a small, portable stuffed animal featuring a lion with a distinctive mane. The finished toy is compact enough to carry on adventures, making it an ideal handmade gift or personal keepsake for knitters of all experience levels seeking an engaging intermediate project.
This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The lion is created using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern involves knitting separate body components that are later assembled through seaming. A distinctive feature of Leon's design is the mane, which is created using specialized knitting techniques to achieve texture and dimension. The toy is stuffed with fiberfill to create a three-dimensional plush form, and safety features are incorporated through the use of toy safety eyes rather than embroidered alternatives.
The pattern begins with casting on stitches to establish the foundation of the body pieces. Construction starts at the bottom of the body with a cast-on of 9 stitches. The pattern employs standard knitting stitches throughout the project, with increases and decreases used to shape the various components of the lion's body. Seaming is required to join the knitted pieces together, utilizing a darning or tapestry needle for finishing. Embroidery work is minimal, limited to adding a black nose detail using a few metres of black yarn.
Leon the Lion is knitted using DK weight yarn (also known as light worsted, 8 ply, or double knitting). The pattern calls for approximately 50g each of Yellow and Brown DK yarn, plus a few metres of Black yarn for embroidered details. The original photographed sample was created using 100% acrylic yarns that are no longer available. Amanda Berry recommends substituting with modern alternatives such as Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both of which are 100% acrylic options available in a wide range of colors.
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals and are ready to tackle projects involving shaping, seaming, and assembly. The intermediate classification reflects the skills required to manage multiple yarn colors, create the textured mane, perform accurate seaming, and complete the toy assembly process.
