Product Description
This little long-tailed tit loves taking long naps in its cosy nest.
This pattern works up super quickly in 1-2 hours so it would make a perfect gift! It would be a lovely decoration for a houseplant, decorative branch, or shelf.
This pattern has plenty of helpful photos to show you how the bird should look at certain stages. It is written in English using US terminology but is easy to understand for those who use English terms as the only different stitch is sc (dc in English terms). The long-tailed tit measures 5cm tall. It is fine to sell small numbers of finished items made from this pattern but please credit me (Woolly Wilderness) as the designer.

What Is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a Long-tailed Tit amigurumi toy, a small stuffed crocheted bird standing 5cm tall. The finished project is a decorative or collectible toy suitable for gift-giving or personal craft enjoyment.
Difficulty Level and Time Commitment
The Long-tailed Tit Amigurumi Pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring some prior crochet experience and familiarity with fundamental techniques. The estimated make time is approximately 1.5 hours, making it a manageable project for an afternoon or evening of crafting.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several essential amigurumi construction techniques:
- Magic ring (mr) – Used to create a closed center for seamless starting rounds
- Color changes – The pattern features multiple color transitions throughout, indicated by capital letters in the instructions to help crafters track where new colors are introduced
- Invisible decrease (dec) – Applied for seamless shaping and a polished finished appearance
- Increases (inc) – Used to expand stitch counts and shape the bird's body
Crochet Stitches
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is single crochet (sc), which forms the foundation of amigurumi construction. Single crochet provides a tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys, preventing filling from showing through. Increases and decreases are worked using single crochet variations to shape the bird's head, body, and tail.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn and a 3.00mm crochet hook, with a gauge of 1.5 inches. The specific yarn used in the original design is Stylecraft Special DK in three colorways:
- Black – approximately 6.3 meters
- White – approximately 12.8 meters
- Stone – approximately 2.1 meters
Note: Using a different hook size, yarn weight, or gauge will alter the final dimensions of the completed bird. Crafters should verify their gauge before beginning to ensure the toy reaches the intended 5cm height.
Pattern Structure and Color Work
The pattern includes detailed abbreviations and round-by-round instructions using standard crochet notation. Due to the extensive color changes required to create the bird's distinctive markings, the designer recommends crossing off completed stitches as you progress through each round. This tracking method helps prevent errors when managing multiple color transitions and ensures accurate stitch placement throughout the construction process.
