Product Description

I’ve always loved fairy tales, folk tales, and traditional stories from around the world. In many of these stories the number three plays a big role — the third son goes off to be heroic, it is the third prince who wins the hand of the princess, the third daughter is the one who produces diamonds and roses when she speaks. When my cousin announced she was having her third baby I decided to knit the blanket in a Yowza Mini Trio, and couldn’t resist calling it the Magic Number Blanket.

The pattern is written so that you can weigh your skeins, do a tiny bit of math, and use as much of the yarn as possible. If you prefer to avoid math you can use the numbers provided. So long as your gauge matches mine you should be able to knit the blanket out of your own set of three magical skeins!

What is Being Made

The Magic Number Blanket is a knitted throw blanket designed by Helen Cosgrove-Davies, inspired by the significance of the number three in fairy tales, folk tales, and traditional stories from around the world. This blanket celebrates the magical role of "three" across global storytelling traditions—from the heroic third son to the third daughter who speaks diamonds and roses. The blanket was originally created for a special occasion: welcoming a third baby into the family.

Knitting Technique and Construction

This blanket is constructed using a corner-to-corner knitting technique, a method that begins at one corner and expands outward before decreasing back down to a point. This approach creates a geometric, diagonal-oriented design that builds from a single corner through increasing rows, reaches its maximum width at the center, and then symmetrically decreases to complete the blanket. The corner-to-corner method is particularly efficient for blanket projects and creates interesting visual interest through its directional construction.

Yarn and Materials

The Magic Number Blanket is designed to be knit from three skeins of yarn in DK weight, making it an economical project that maximizes yardage usage. The pattern was originally worked in a Yowza Mini Trio yarn set. The design is flexible and allows crafters to weigh their own skeins and perform simple calculations to use as much yarn as possible, or alternatively, crafters can follow provided yardage numbers if they prefer to skip the math. Gauge matching is essential for success with this pattern.

Difficulty Level and Accessibility

Rated as a beginner-level project, the Magic Number Blanket is accessible to knitters new to the craft while remaining engaging for more experienced makers. The pattern accommodates different comfort levels with mathematics and yarn calculations, offering both a customizable approach for those who enjoy weighing yarn and working with numbers, and a straightforward option for those who prefer to follow set yardage guidelines.

Pattern Format

This pattern is available as a free, downloadable PDF, making it easily accessible to knitters worldwide. The written instructions are clear enough to accommodate various skill levels within the beginner category.
