Mermaid Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Mermaid pattern is a crochet applique design that creates a decorative mermaid figure suitable for embellishing garments, accessories, or standalone display pieces. This intermediate-level project produces a charming crocheted mermaid with customizable color options, including variations with purple, pink, and blue tails. The finished applique can be sewn onto fabric or other crochet projects to add a whimsical, oceanic aesthetic.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction involves creating individual components that are later assembled together using a sewing needle and thread. The pattern utilizes chain stitches as the foundation for shaping, with subsequent rows built using various crochet stitches to form the mermaid's body, tail, and facial features. The modular approach allows crafters to work on separate pieces before joining them into the final applique.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – Foundation stitch for starting rows and creating openwork
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining rounds and securing stitches
- Double crochet (dc) – Primary stitch for building fabric density and structure
- Half treble crochet (htr) – Provides medium height for shaping and texture variation
- Treble crochet (tr) – Creates taller stitches for specific shaping elements
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – Produces the tallest stitches for dramatic shaping where needed
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 4 or 5 colors of crochet cotton or wool. The designer used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton in multiple color combinations. For the classic version, the colors are (130) Old Lace, (208) Yellow Gold, (106) Snow White, and (400) Petrol Blue. Alternative color schemes include a purple-tailed variation using (521) Deep Violet, (162) Black Coffee, (404) English Tea, and (519) Fresia, as well as a pink-tailed version. The lace-weight yarn creates delicate, detailed stitching suitable for fine applique work.
Tools and Notions: A 1mm crochet hook is recommended for working with the fine 2 ply crochet cotton. Additional materials include scissors for yarn trimming, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and sewing thread with a needle for assembling the mermaid components together. Optional embellishments include 2 small black beads for eyes and a bead for the flower center, adding dimensional detail to the finished applique.
