Product Description

The MIARA HAT is a great pattern for that last minute gift, with 2 options for yarn weight: worsted and sport weight, and 2 sizes in each yarn. The hat can be knit with 2 or more colours, and is a perfect use for those mini skeins, which can be held double or knit at a looser gauge. The pattern features slipped sts and is easily memorised.

I chat about the pattern in the EastLondonKnit podcast (available on YouTube), Episode 45, which also features a lovely interview with Carol Feller!

What is Being Made

The Miara Hat is a knitted beanie designed as a quick gift project suitable for knitters of all skill levels. This pattern offers versatility through multiple yarn weight options and colorwork possibilities, making it an excellent choice for using up yarn scraps, mini skeins, or coordinating colors in a single design.

Pattern Overview

The Miara Hat features a straightforward construction that is easily memorized once the pattern repeat is established. The design incorporates slipped stitches as a key visual and structural element, creating texture and interest while remaining accessible to beginner knitters. The pattern supports both single-color and multi-color knitting, allowing crafters to create a monochromatic hat or introduce contrast colors for added visual depth.

Yarn Weight Options

This pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, providing flexibility in material selection:

  • Worsted Weight Version: Uses De rerum natura Gilliatt (100% Merino wool, 250 m/273 yds per 100g ball). Main color requires approximately 35g/88 m/96 yds, with contrast color requiring approximately 15g/38 m/41 yds.
  • Sport Weight Version: Utilizes Walcot Yarns Opus (70% Falkland Merino, 30% Baby Alpaca blend), offering a lighter-weight alternative.
  • Mini Skein Option: The pattern accommodates mini skeins held double or knit at a larger gauge, making it ideal for stash busting and creative color experimentation.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Miara Hat employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters:

  • Slipped Stitches (sl st): A primary stitch technique used throughout the pattern to create visual texture and pattern definition while maintaining ease of execution.
  • Knit Stitch (k): The foundational stitch used to construct the hat's fabric.
  • Central Double Decrease (cdd): An intermediate decrease technique that reduces two stitches while creating a centered, decorative effect. Executed by slipping two stitches together as if to knit, knitting one stitch, then passing the slipped stitches over the knit stitch, resulting in a net decrease of two stitches.
  • Make 1 Left (M1l): An increase technique that picks up the strand between two needles from front to back with the left needle tip, then knits into the back of this new stitch, adding one stitch to the row.
  • Make 1 Right (M1r): An increase technique that picks up the strand between two needles, knitting into it to add one stitch with a rightward lean.
  • K2tog: A basic right-leaning decrease that knits two stitches together as one.

Materials and Tools

The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight and a selection of yarn in main color and contrast color options. Merino wool and Merino-blend yarns are featured in the recommended materials, offering softness, breathability, and excellent stitch definition. Crafters can substitute yarns of equivalent weight and yardage while maintaining pattern integrity.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Miara Hat is accessible to knitters new to the craft while remaining engaging for experienced makers. The easily memorized stitch pattern and straightforward construction make it an ideal project for building confidence and skill development.
