What is Being Made
The Mojo Mender is a sideways, crescent-shaped shawl designed to reignite your knitting passion. This finished shawl measures 70" x 15" (178 cm x 38 cm) when lightly blocked, making it an easy-to-wear, eye-catching accessory. The design philosophy centers on creating a pattern that looks complex while remaining accessible to knitters of all skill levels, from beginners to experts.
Design Philosophy and Inspiration
Created by designer Laura Olsavsky, the Mojo Mender addresses a universal knitting experience: the temporary loss of creative motivation. This shawl was specifically designed to help knitters rediscover their enthusiasm for the craft. The pattern achieves visual interest through a deceptively simple construction that appears far more intricate than its straightforward techniques suggest.
Construction Method
The Mojo Mender is knit from end to end in one piece, with borders and edging incorporated throughout the knitting process. This sideways construction method creates the distinctive crescent shape while allowing the knitter to work continuously without seaming. The pattern uses a combination of fundamental knitting techniques layered together for visual depth and texture.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knit surface
- Garter stitch sections are incorporated to add textural variation and visual breaks
- Easy lace patterns are strategically placed throughout to create interest without requiring advanced lace-knitting skills
- Eyelet rolled edging forms the signature finishing detail, creating a beautiful, decorative border that defines the shawl's elegant appearance
Yarn and Materials
The Mojo Mender requires 320-440 yards (290-400 meters) of yarn, making it an efficient project that doesn't demand excessive yardage. The pattern calls for Fingering to Sport weight yarn, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The sample shown uses Fibranatura Flax, a 100% Linen fiber listed as DK weight, demonstrating how yarn weight recommendations can be adapted based on individual fiber characteristics and desired drape.
Skill Level
Classified as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Mojo Mender accommodates knitters new to the craft while remaining engaging for experienced knitters. The straightforward stitch combinations and logical construction make it an ideal project for those seeking to rebuild confidence or explore shawl knitting without overwhelming complexity.
Why This Pattern Works
The Mojo Mender succeeds because it balances simplicity with visual sophistication. The combination of stockinette stitch, garter stitch, subtle lace elements, and the distinctive eyelet rolled edging creates a shawl that appears intricate while remaining manageable for the intended skill level. The modest yardage requirement makes it accessible and quick to complete, helping knitters experience the satisfaction of finishing a beautiful garment.
