Montreal Cowl by Tanja Luescher
Project Overview
The Montreal Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Tanja Luescher and knitted in Switzerland. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a warm, versatile cowl accessory inspired by the designer's best friend living in Canada. The finished cowl measures 16 cm [6.5 inches] wide and 112 cm [44 inches] around, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional neck cowl during cold winters.
Construction Method
The Montreal Cowl is worked as a long scarf that can be finished in two ways: either seamed together or joined using Kitchener stitch. This flexible construction approach allows knitters to choose their preferred joining method based on their skill level and available tools. The pattern accommodates both finishing techniques, making it accessible to knitters with varying experience levels.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern features cable knitting as a primary design element, requiring the use of a cable needle during construction. The stitch pattern is worked to a gauge of 15 stitches over 10 cm [4 inches] after blocking. Knitters will need to use a cable needle, or alternatively a spare double-pointed needle in the same size or slightly smaller, to create the textured cable details that define this cowl's visual interest and structure.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Montreal Cowl pattern calls for super bulky weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Garnstudio Drops Eskimo, which is 100% wool available in 50 g [1.8 oz] balls with 50 m [54 yards] per ball. The pattern uses two colors: 2 balls of shade #63 Night Sky as the main color (MC) and 1 ball of shade #01 Off White as the contrast color (CC). Alternatively, knitters may substitute with any super bulky yarn of their choice, requiring approximately 100 m [110 yards] of main color yarn and 100 m [110 yards] of contrast color yarn.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires 8 mm [US 11] needles in a 40 cm length, which can be either straight or circular needles according to knitter preference. Additional tools include one cable needle (or a spare double-pointed needle of the same size or slightly smaller), an optional sewing needle for seaming the cowl ends together, and an optional spare double-pointed needle for joining the ends using Kitchener stitch.
