Moss Stitch and Cable Boy's Jumper by SiennaIvyCrochet

What is Being Made

This is a stylish boy's knitted jumper (sweater) featuring a combination of moss stitch and cable knit details. The design is available in six size options ranging from age 2-3 years through to 12-13 years, with chest measurements from 62cm (24½ inches) up to 86cm (34¼ inches). The jumper offers a classic, timeless aesthetic suitable for everyday wear, with side seam lengths ranging from 23cm to 37cm and sleeve seams from 24cm to 42cm depending on the chosen size.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project combines two primary stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture. The main body of the garment features moss stitch (also known as Irish moss stitch or imst), which creates a subtle, bumpy texture through alternating knit and purl stitches. This stitch is worked flat in rows and requires careful attention to maintain the pattern consistency throughout the piece.

The design also incorporates cable knit detailing, which adds a decorative, three-dimensional element to the jumper. The cable technique involves using a cable needle to cross stitches over one another, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like appearance. Specifically, the pattern uses c4f (cable 4 front) technique, where four stitches are cabled by slipping two stitches onto a cable needle, holding them at the front of the work, knitting the next two stitches, and then knitting the two stitches from the cable needle. This creates a professional, structured look that contrasts beautifully with the textured moss stitch background.

The construction involves standard garment assembly techniques including increases and decreases to shape the body and sleeves. The pattern uses patt 2tog (pattern 2 together) for decreasing stitches while maintaining the stitch pattern, and inc (increase) for adding stitches by working into the same stitch twice, ensuring seamless integration with the overall design.

Stitches Used

  • Moss Stitch (Irish Moss Stitch / imst) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment, creating texture through alternating knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern
  • Knit Stitch (k) – Basic knit stitch used in cable sections and pattern work
  • Purl Stitch (p) – Used in combination with knit stitches to create moss stitch texture
  • Cable 4 Front (c4f) – The primary cable technique used to create decorative cable panel details
  • Pattern Decreases (patt 2tog) – Decreasing stitches while maintaining pattern consistency
  • Increases (inc) – Adding stitches for shaping by working into the same stitch twice

Materials and Specifications

This project uses aran weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating garments with good drape and structure. The yardage requirements vary by size: 2 balls (100g each) for the smallest size (age 2-3 years), increasing to 4 balls for the largest sizes (ages 10-11 and 12-13 years).

The pattern requires two pairs of needles in different sizes to accommodate the stitch gauge requirements. 5mm (UK size 6) needles are used for the main knitting, while 4mm (UK size 8) needles are used for ribbed sections or cuff work to create a tighter tension. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches, and two stitch holders are needed for holding stitches during construction, typically for the neckline or armhole shaping.

Gauge and Tension

Achieving the correct gauge is critical for this project to ensure the finished garment fits properly. Using 5mm needles, the tension should be 18 stitches and 24 rows equal 10cm x 10cm when working in moss stitch. For the cable pattern panel specifically, 18 stitches over the pattern panel should measure 8cm in width using 5mm needles. Knitters should always swatch and measure their gauge before beginning the full project, as variations in tension can significantly affect the final garment size.

The intermediate difficulty level reflects the combination of maintaining moss stitch consistency while managing cable cross

Just beginning the sweater.

I'm drawn to sweater patterns for my great-grandson and this one caught my interest and it was downloadable which is a bonus feature. I am still knitting the the sweater, but I find the pattern very easy to follow. The yarn I choose was Paint Box in the same colour as was used for the pattern picture and it is providing an excellent showing of the pattern. I am very happy with my purchase of Moss stitch and cable boy's jumper / sweater.

Not happy with uncaring attitude

On circular needles which I don't nor want to use. Didn't find out until I had paid for a now useless pattern.
