Mütze, Loopschal und Armstulpen in Schachenmayr Tendance – Pattern Summary
This free downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr (Design 1936) presents a coordinated three-piece winter accessories set, knitted in the chunky-weight yarn Schachenmayr select Tendance. The set comprises a beanie-style hat (Mütze), a loop scarf (Loopschal), and a pair of arm warmers (Armstulpen), all worked in a rich Lila (purple), colour 08306. The pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, relying almost entirely on a single, straightforward stitch pattern throughout all three pieces, making it an ideal project for those new to knitting in the round or working with chunky yarn.
Yarn and Materials
Schachenmayr select Tendance is a chunky-weight blended yarn with a warm and slightly luxurious fibre composition: 60% Schurwolle (pure new wool), 22% polyacrylic, 13% polyamide, and 5% mohair. The mohair content gives the fabric a subtle halo and softness, while the wool provides warmth and structure. Each 50 g ball yields approximately 45 metres of yardage. The total yarn requirement for the complete set is 300 g, broken down as approximately 70 g each for the hat and arm warmers, and 150 g for the loop scarf.
Needles required are from Milward and include a 40 cm circular needle in size 10 (metric), a set of double-pointed needles (Nadelspiel) in size 10 for working the crown decreases of the hat, and a blunt tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
Stitch and Technique Overview
All three pieces are worked exclusively in stocking stitch (glatt rechts) — knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows when worked flat, or knit every round when worked in the round. The finished fabric is intentionally worn with the reverse stocking stitch (glatt links) side facing outward, giving the accessories a smooth, matte appearance characteristic of this aesthetic choice in European knitwear design.
The gauge (Maschenprobe) is 10 stitches and 16 rows/rounds to 10 cm × 10 cm in stocking stitch on size 10 needles. Achieving this gauge is important for ensuring the finished dimensions match those stated in the pattern.
The Hat (Mütze)
The hat is designed to fit a head circumference of approximately 52–54 cm. It is worked in the round on a circular needle, beginning with a cast-on of 50 stitches. The body of the hat is knitted in stocking stitch for 17 cm, after which crown shaping begins. As the stitch count decreases, the knitter switches from the circular needle to the double-pointed needles to accommodate the reduced number of stitches comfortably.
Crown decreases are worked over several rounds using k2tog (two stitches knitted together), reducing the stitch count in stages:
- Round 1: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * — reduces to 40 stitches
- Round 3: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * — reduces to 30 stitches
- Round 5: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * — reduces to 20 stitches
- One further plain round, then k2tog ten times — reduces to 10 stitches
The remaining 10 stitches are drawn together tightly with the working yarn to close the crown. The hat is then turned inside out so the purl (reverse stocking stitch) side faces outward. The finished height is approximately 22 cm.
The Loop Scarf (Loopschal)
The loop scarf is knitted flat in stocking stitch, casting on 25 stitches using a provisional cast-on method with a smooth
