Ollie the Octopus Crochet Toy by Donna Wilkins

What Is Being Made

Ollie the Octopus is a child-friendly crochet creature designed by Donna Wilkins. This finished toy measures 8 inches from the top of the head to the bottom of the tentacles, making it an appropriately sized plush toy for small hands. The design features a complete octopus body with eight tentacles and facial details, creating an engaging and playful stuffed toy suitable for children.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet pattern uses continuous round construction, meaning rounds are worked without joining at the end of each round. This technique creates a seamless, spiral effect that is efficient and produces a smooth fabric. The pattern employs a magic circle starting method to begin the central body piece, from which the octopus structure develops. The use of stitch markers helps track the beginning of each round during the continuous working method.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for toy construction:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and shaping
  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building dense, sturdy fabric suitable for stuffed toys
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping the octopus body
  • Single crochet 3 together (sc3tog) – an additional decrease variation for contouring
  • Popcorn stitch (pc) – used for textural detail and visual interest

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and durability for toys. A total of approximately 140 metres (60 grams) of DK acrylic yarn in Colour A (Grass shade) is needed for the main body and eye components. The designer used Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, though any DK weight yarn is suitable as a substitute. Additional yarn includes 10 metres (10 grams) of Colour B (Biscuit shade) for the underside detail and 3 metres (2 grams) of Colour C (White shade) for eye highlights.

A US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook is specified for working with DK weight yarn. The pattern does not require a specific gauge, making it more forgiving for crocheters of varying tension levels. Additional materials include toy stuffing for padding the octopus body, a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and 9mm safety eyes for the face. The pattern notes that embroidered eyes can be substituted if preferred, offering flexibility in finishing options.

Skill Level and Pattern Notes

Classified as an intermediate-level project, Ollie the Octopus requires familiarity with basic crochet techniques and comfort working in continuous rounds. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology abbreviations. The continuous round construction method and the combination of basic and slightly more advanced stitches like the popcorn stitch make this an appropriate challenge for crocheters with some experience who wish to expand their skills in toy making.
