Payson Cowlette by Ash Christine

What Is Being Made

The Payson Cowlette is a knitted cowl designed to celebrate the town of Payson, Arizona, and its surrounding forests. This accessory piece combines practical warmth with thoughtful design, making it suitable for outdoor activities like hiking or sightseeing in cooler weather. The cowlette features a blend of textural stitches and shaping techniques that create visual interest while maintaining wearability.

Design Inspiration and Construction

Inspired by the forests and natural beauty surrounding Payson, Arizona, this intermediate-level knitting project showcases a location-based design from Ash Christine's locations collection. The garment is structured to balance decorative elements with functional warmth, making it an ideal layering piece for outdoor enthusiasts.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch sections — creates a textured, reversible fabric that adds visual depth and dimension to the design
  • Shawl shaping — provides structured draping and a flattering silhouette around the neck and shoulders
  • Eyelet rows — simple lace-like openings that add delicate detail and allow for breathability
  • Stockinette stitch cowl — smooth, classic stitch pattern that creates a polished finish for the main cowl section

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Payson Cowlette employs a combination of fundamental knitting stitches to achieve its textured appearance. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, forms the primary textured sections. Eyelet rows introduce lace elements through yarn-over decreases. The stockinette stitch cowl portion uses alternating knit and purl rows to create the smooth, refined finish typical of traditional cowl neckwear.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques and varied stitch patterns within a single project.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern requires yarn for completion, with specific yardage and weight specifications provided in the downloadable PDF. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.
