Phydeaux Knot Cowl / Neckwarmer Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Phydeaux Knot Cowl is a versatile neckwarmer designed by Brenda Lavell. This one-skein knitting project creates a finished cowl that combines style with practicality, suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate knitters looking to expand their technical skills. The design features a sophisticated stitch pattern that appears more complex than it actually is to execute, making it an excellent choice for knitters seeking to challenge themselves without overwhelming difficulty.
Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs a sophisticated stitch pattern that serves as the primary design element of the cowl. While the stitch work may appear intricate to the eye, the pattern is engineered to be accessible for advanced beginning knitters. The construction method involves casting on stitches and working through the pattern repeat to create the finished fabric. The pattern includes guidance on blocking to achieve proper gauge and finished dimensions, which helps set the stitches and refine the appearance of the sophisticated stitch pattern used throughout the project.
Materials and Tools
The Phydeaux Knot Cowl requires 60 yards of super bulky yarn. The pattern was originally designed using Baby Tahki 100% merino wool, a premium natural fiber. Alternative yarn suggestions include Plymouth Mega Encore, Twinkle Soft Chunky, Blue Sky Bulky Alpaca, and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick—all suitable super bulky weight options that will produce similar results.
Knitting needles required include Size 17 needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge) for working the main fabric. An optional one size larger needle may be used for binding off if desired. The pattern specifies a gauge of 10 stitches and 10 rows over 4 inches in pattern, blocked. Construction begins with casting on 16 stitches using the method of choice, with instructions to leave a long tail of at least 1.4 times the desired finished width.
