Pine Island Pullover by Sarah Smuland – Pattern Summary

The Pine Island Pullover is a relaxed, modern knitwear design by Sarah Smuland, published by Blue Sky Fibers as part of their Classic Series. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern (Pattern No. 20163) is rated Advanced Beginner and is designed specifically for use with Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton Worsted yarn. The pattern includes instructions for a pullover sweater in five sizes, plus an optional one-size cowl that mimics a slouchy turtleneck when worn together with the sweater.

What Is Being Made

The Pine Island Pullover Sweater

The Pine Island Pullover is a long, loose-fitting pullover sweater with a distinctly contemporary silhouette. Its defining style details include side slits, exposed seams, and a generous, relaxed length that give it a fashion-forward, effortless look. The sweater is knitted flat in two identical body panels and two sleeves, then assembled using visible, intentional seaming that becomes part of the aesthetic. It is available in five women's sizes:

  • XS: 34½" finished chest
  • S: 39" finished chest
  • M: 44" finished chest
  • L: 49" finished chest
  • XL: 53½" finished chest

Finished body length ranges from 26½" to 30¼" depending on size, and sleeve length to underarm ranges from 18" to 22½". The sweater is shaped at the upper body using raglan shaping, making it a great construction technique for advancing knitters to learn.

The Optional Cowl

The pattern also includes instructions for a one-size optional cowl that, when worn with the pullover, creates the appearance of a slouchy turtleneck. The cowl measures 28" in circumference and 12" in width, making it a substantial, cozy accessory that can also be worn independently. It requires 2 hanks of Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton Worsted, held double just like the sweater.

Materials Used

Yarn

The pattern is designed exclusively for Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton (Worsted), a 100% organic cotton yarn. Each hank contains 100g / 150 yards. The yarn is worked held doubled throughout — meaning two strands are held together as one — which creates a lofty, substantial fabric with beautiful stitch definition. The colorway shown in the sample is No. 614 Drift. Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Sweater: 7 (8, 10, 11, 13) hanks depending on size
  • Optional Cowl: 2 hanks

Needles and Tools

  • Needles: Size 13 (9mm) 24" circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Other tools: Stitch marker and tapestry needle

Although a circular needle is used, the sweater body and sleeves are worked flat (back and forth in rows), which is a common and beginner-friendly approach that avoids the complexity of working in the round for large garment pieces.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Primary Stitches

  • Knit 1, Purl 2 Rib (k1, p2 rib): Used for the lower body hem and sleeve cuffs, this rib stitch creates a stretchy, textured band. In this pattern, it is worked over a 5" section at the cast-on edge, giving the sweater a structured base before transitioning into the body.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the sweater is worked in reverse stockinette — where the purl side faces outward
