Product Description

Pomander is a decorative cardigan to warm a special baby. The cabled swags trimming the seed-stitch yoke recall celebratory buntings, and optional subtle cables travel down the sleeves for a bit of extra style. The intricate details in this design make it at least an adventurous intermediate-level project, and you’ll have to work from a chart for the yoke, but all symbols and techniques like the i-cord bind-off and provisional cast-on are fully explained with text or video links.

Pomander is knit from the bottom up in one piece. Stitches are cast on provisionally for sleeves to work yoke, then picked up and knit in the round to the cuff. This allows you to adjust the sleeve length as desired (and gets you to the fun part more quickly after all that stockinet!). Tips, tricks, and "knitter's choice" options are sprinkled throughout the pattern.

The cardigan is designed to fit snugly but comfortably, with an inch or two of positive ease.

What is Being Made

The Pomander Baby Cardigan is a fitted, buttoned cardigan designed for infants ranging from 3 to 18 months old. This knitted garment is engineered to fit snugly with positive ease, accommodating the natural variations in baby body shapes and sizes. The cardigan is available in four size options with chest circumferences of 18", 19", 20", and 21.75" when buttoned. The design was modeled on a 6-month-old with a 18.5" chest circumference, broad shoulders, and long arms, though the fit is intended to be more generous on most infants.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to construct a professional baby garment. The cardigan is worked using circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpns) to create seamless construction, particularly for the sleeves which are worked in the round. The pattern accommodates different needle preferences, allowing knitters to use either double-pointed needles, a second circular needle, or a longer circular needle as desired for sleeve work. Gauge is a critical element in this pattern, and knitters are encouraged to swatch and adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the desired fabric hand and drape.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern instructions, the Pomander is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for fingering-weight yarn. The pattern emphasizes achieving proper gauge and fabric quality over rigid stitch specifications, recognizing that individual knitter tension and needle preferences may vary. Test knitters found that some needed to adjust from the recommended 3.00mm needles down to 2.75mm to achieve optimal fabric characteristics, indicating the pattern's flexibility in accommodating different knitting styles.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Pomander Baby Cardigan requires between 400 and 600 yards of yarn depending on the size selected: 400 yards for the 3-6 month size, 450 yards for the 9-month size, 520 yards for the 12-month size, and 600 yards for the 18-month size. The recommended yarn is Oceanwind Knits BFL Fingering or other light fingering-weight wool. A superwash yarn may be substituted for easier care, and a solid or nearly solid color is recommended to showcase the garment's construction details.

Needles and Tools

This pattern calls for 3.00mm needles in multiple configurations: a 24" circular needle and double-pointed needles (dpns), with the flexibility to use a second circular needle or longer circular needle for sleeve construction as preferred. Some test knitters required 2.75mm needles to achieve their desired fabric characteristics, making needle size adjustment an important consideration during the swatch and gauge-checking phase.

Fit and Sizing Considerations

The Pomander is specifically designed with an inch or two of positive ease to ensure comfortable wear on growing infants. The pattern recommends measuring the recipient's chest circumference when possible, as babies vary significantly in size and proportions. The sample garment fit generously on most infants despite being modeled on a baby with broad shoulders and longer arms than average, suggesting the pattern accommodates a range of body types within each size category.
