Product Description
Ranrike is the old Norse name for what is now southeast Norway and Bohuslän (Sweden). The name comes from Rán, the Old Norse goddess of the sea, and refers to her kingdom. Ranrike is famous for its rocky landscape and granite cliffs.
The edging of the shawl is worked first. Stitches for the main body of the shawl are picked up along the edging, and the crescent shape of the shawl is created by working short rows. The pattern is charted, with lace patterning on every other row.
The shawl can be knit in three different sizes. Small: Wingspan: 48 in (122 cm) Height: 14 in (36 cm) Medium: Wingspan: 60 in (152 cm) Height: 15.5 in (39 cm) Large: Wingspan: 72 in (184 cm) Height: 17 in (43 cm) 1 skein will be enough for the small shawl, but for the medium or large size you'll need 2 skeins.
Ranrike Shawl by Anna Dalvi
Design Overview
The Ranrike Shawl is an advanced knitting pattern inspired by the historic region of Ranrike in southeast Norway and Bohuslän, Sweden. Named after Rán, the Old Norse goddess of the sea, this shawl captures the essence of the region's dramatic rocky landscape and granite cliffs through its elegant crescent silhouette and thoughtful construction method.
What Is Being Made
This is a crescent-shaped shawl available in three sizes: Small (48 in wingspan, 14 in height), Medium (60 in wingspan, 15.5 in height), and Large (72 in wingspan, 17 in height). The shawl features a distinctive construction where the edging is worked first, followed by picking up stitches along the straight edge to create the main body. This technique-driven approach results in a beautifully proportioned accessory suitable for various occasions.
Knitting Techniques
- Edging-first construction method for precise shaping
- Stitch pickup along a straight edge to establish the main body
- Crescent shaping created through strategic increases and decreases
- Blocking to achieve finished dimensions and enhance drape
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure
- Specialized edging stitches for the border
- Shaping techniques integrated throughout the body
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern uses 4-ply yarn, specifically Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk, which features a luxurious blend of 75% merino, 15% cashmere, and 10% silk. The yardage required varies by size: 1 skein for the Small size and 2 skeins for Medium and Large sizes, with each skein providing 430 yards (393 meters) per 100 grams. The combination of merino's elasticity, cashmere's softness, and silk's lustrous sheen creates an elegant drape ideal for a shawl.
Tools and Notions
- US 6 (4.0 mm) needles for working the 4-ply yarn
- Large-eyed, blunt needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 11.5 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge and blocking the finished shawl is essential for reaching the intended wingspan and height measurements, ensuring the crescent shape displays correctly and the fabric achieves optimal drape.
Skill Level
Rated as an advanced pattern, the Ranrike Shawl requires experienced knitters comfortable with stitch pickup, shaping techniques, and the precision needed for a garment-quality accessory. The edging-first construction and crescent shaping demand attention to detail and understanding of how shawl geometry works.
