Product Description

With this very easy pattern, you can make a realistic badger plushy.

Size: 7.8 inch / 20 cm long from nose to tail when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials: For this crochet badger you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn: mixed black (1/4 of a 100 yard skein), grey (1/2) and white (1/5). These quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: black 0005, grey 0057 and white 0051. You also need a hard (animal) brush to brush your badger to get fuzzy.

Realistic Badger Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet pattern for creating a realistic badger amigurumi toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. The finished badger measures approximately 7.8 inches (20 cm) in length, making it a small decorative or play toy. The pattern creates a three-dimensional stuffed animal using the amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting in continuous rounds to form a compact, sculptural figure.

Crochet Techniques Used

The badger is constructed using fundamental amigurumi techniques that create a realistic, dimensional form. The primary method involves working in the round using continuous spirals, which allows for seamless construction without visible seams between rounds. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to clearly identify the beginning of each round, moving the marker upward as new rounds progress to maintain consistent shaping and prevent confusion during construction.

Color changes are a significant technical element in this pattern, as the badger's distinctive markings require transitioning between different yarn colors. The pattern employs color-coded instructions for complex color changes to simplify the process. When changing colors, the transition occurs in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring that the new color appears on the hook as you begin the next round. This technique creates clean, intentional color shifts that define the badger's natural striping and facial markings.

Stitches Used

While the PDF excerpt does not provide a complete stitch list, the pattern utilizes standard American crochet terminology throughout. Amigurumi construction typically employs fundamental stitches including single crochet for tight, dense fabric and increases and decreases for shaping the body, head, and limbs into realistic proportions.

Materials Required

The pattern is designed to be worked with aran weight yarn, which provides the appropriate thickness and drape for a 20 cm finished badger. The designer specifically recommends fuzzy yarn to enhance the realistic appearance of the badger's fur texture. The yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which provides both the desired fuzziness and the structural integrity needed for amigurumi toys.

You will also need an appropriate crochet hook sized for aran weight yarn, a stitch marker for tracking round progression, and fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed badger form. The pattern's final dimensions depend on both the yarn weight selected and individual crochet tension, so experimentation with yarn choice and hook size may be necessary to achieve desired results.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color changes and three-dimensional shaping. The intermediate rating reflects the requirement to manage multiple color transitions and maintain consistent tension while working in continuous rounds.
