Product Description

ERRATA: The initial set-up instructions should read: Cast on 9 stitches.

Ridgeline is a garter stitch crescent shawl with a knit-on Irish lace edging. This shawl is both seamless and reversible, making it perfect for wear as both a shawl and as a cowl. The DK weight of the yarn makes it an elegant and wearable choice for cool weather, day or night.

This shawl requires approximately 425 yards (160 g) of DK weight 4-ply yarn. It is recommended that one alternate skeins while working the body of the shawl if using hand-dyed yarn, as is recommended for this pattern. The edging pattern begins with a set-up row on the right side of the fabric because the cable cast-on method is worked from what will become the wrong side of the fabric. The stitch pattern of the lace edging is primarily worked on the wrong side rows. This is not a design error.

Ridgeline Shawl by Keya Kuhn

What Is Being Made

Ridgeline is a knitted shawl designed by Keya Kuhn. This intermediate-level triangular shawl features a finished depth at the center back of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and a width of 57 inches (144.8 cm), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The shawl is worked from a single circular needle and showcases a garter stitch construction that creates a textured, reversible fabric.

Techniques Used

The Ridgeline shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. Yarn overs are used throughout the pattern to create openwork details and shaping. Decreases in the form of knit two together (K2tog) and slip-slip-knit (SSK) stitches help shape the triangular silhouette. Increases using the knit front and back (Kftb) method add stitches where needed for expansion. The shawl is worked in the round on a circular needle, which allows for seamless construction and easy stitch management across the growing width of the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The foundational stitch that creates the primary fabric texture
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create stitch definition
  • Yarn Over (YO): Creates decorative holes and contributes to lace patterning and shaping
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease that shapes the shawl
  • Slip-Slip-Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease used for balanced shaping
  • Knit Front and Back (Kftb): An increase method that adds stitches for expansion
  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this stitch produces a ridged, textured fabric that is reversible and lies flat

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for approximately 425 yards (160 g) of DK weight 4-ply yarn. The sample shown uses Cedar Hill Farm Company Squee DK in the colorway Hive, which is composed of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon. This fiber blend provides durability, elasticity, and easy care properties. Two skeins of 264 yards per 100 g each are required to complete the project.

Needles and Notions: The shawl is worked on US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer. The gauge is 20 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch when blocked. Additional materials needed include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and waste yarn for stitch holders if desired during construction.
