Ripple Socks by Keya Kuhn

What Is Being Made

Ripple Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Keya Kuhn for creating a pair of fitted socks. The pattern offers two sizing options: Medium with a 7" to 8" (17.75 to 20.3 cm) leg circumference, and Large with a 9" to 10" (23 to 25.5 cm) leg circumference. The foot circumference is proportional to the leg circumference, ensuring a well-fitted garment throughout. This intermediate-level project is ideal for knitters looking to expand their sock-making skills with a distinctive stitch pattern.

Techniques Used

The Ripple Socks pattern employs circular knitting techniques, utilizing either circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) to construct the sock in the round. The pattern includes heel shaping, which may be worked on additional needles if desired. A key characteristic of this design is the use of a stretchy stitch pattern whose stitch count does not directly reflect the finished product's actual sizing. This elasticity allows the socks to conform to various foot shapes while maintaining the specified circumference ranges. Knitters are advised to distribute stitches among DPNs in a manner that suits their preferred working method.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch featured in Ripple Socks is the Ripple pattern stitch, which creates a textured, undulating fabric. This stitch pattern is worked at a gauge of 8 stitches and 12 rows per inch when measured in the unblocked state. The Ripple stitch's inherent stretch and visual interest make it suitable for sock construction, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional fit.

Materials

Yarn: Cedar Hill Farm Company Journey in 100% Superwash Merino, 4-ply weight, with a yardage of 438 yards per 100 grams. One skein is required to complete the project. The pattern is shown in the Ellis Island colorway. The yarn weight options include both 3-ply and 4-ply options, allowing flexibility in material selection.

Needles: US #1 (2.25mm) circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) are required. Additional needles for heel construction are optional, depending on the knitter's preferred technique.

Notions and Accessories: A locking stitch marker, yarn needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn for provisional cast-on or other techniques are necessary to complete the project.

Pattern Details

This pattern is presented in downloadable PDF format and is intended for personal use only. The copyright is held by Keya Kuhn, 2017, with all rights reserved. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some prior sock-making experience. The stretchy nature of the Ripple stitch pattern is a defining feature, requiring knitters to pay attention to the circumference measurements provided rather than relying solely on stitch counts to determine fit.
