Sap Moon Shawl by Mindy Wilkes

Project Overview

The Sap Moon Shawl is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Mindy Wilkes, inspired by March's Sap Moon—the time of year when sap begins to flow through trees. This intermediate-level knitting project features a sophisticated construction method and decorative colorwork techniques that create visual interest and texture throughout the finished piece.

Construction Method

This shawl is constructed from the top down, a popular method in shawl design that allows knitters to customize the final size by continuing to knit until desired dimensions are reached. The top-down approach provides flexibility for adjusting yardage requirements based on personal preferences and available materials.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details

  • Woven Plaid Pattern: The shawl features a woven plaid pattern created through strategic yarn color changes and stitch manipulation, adding visual complexity and depth to the design.
  • Striped Elements: Horizontal or vertical stripes complement the plaid pattern, enhancing the geometric aesthetic of the finished shawl.
  • Garter Stitch Ruffled Edge: A ruffled edge constructed in garter stitch provides a decorative border. Garter stitch—created by knitting every row—produces a textured, ridged fabric that creates natural ruffles when worked along the shawl's perimeter.

Yarn Requirements and Materials

This project uses sport weight yarn across three coordinating colors for the colorwork design. The total yardage needed is approximately 670 yards (612 m) of sport weight yarn, distributed as follows:

  • Main Color: 490 yards (448 m) – Shown in Classic Elite Fresco #5317 Sangria
  • Contrast Color 1: 90 yards (82 m) – Shown in Classic Elite Fresco #5301 Parchment
  • Contrast Color 2: 90 yards (82 m) – Shown in Classic Elite Fresco

The recommended yarn is Classic Elite Fresco, a premium blend consisting of 60% wool, 30% baby alpaca, and 10% angora. This fiber composition provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen. The yarn yields 164 yards per 50-gram skein.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 38 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking. While gauge is not critical for this project since fit is not a primary concern, variations in gauge will affect the finished size and may alter the total yardage required. Knitters working at a tighter gauge will produce a smaller shawl, while those knitting at a looser gauge will create a larger finished piece.

Additional Notions

  • Stitch markers (optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork techniques and more complex stitch patterns. Experience with basic knitting stitches and familiarity with color changes will enhance the knitting experience.
