Sea Witch Hat by Kelly Spenhoff
What Is Being Made
The Sea Witch hat is a knitted beanie-style hat designed by Kelly Spenhoff, available in child and small adult sizes. This project features a distinctive colorwork design that creates a witchy aesthetic. The finished hat measures 16.25 inches (40.5 cm) in circumference at the brim and 18 inches (45 cm) around the body, making it suitable for smaller head sizes. The design also offers flexibility for customization—adjusting the gauge to 18 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm) produces a larger version with a 20-inch (50 cm) brim circumference and 22.25-inch (55.5 cm) body circumference.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This advanced knitting project requires several essential skills and techniques. Knitters must be proficient with fundamental stitches including cast on, knit, and purl stitches. The pattern incorporates stranded color knitting, a technique where two colors are carried across the row to create intricate colorwork patterns from a chart. The pattern also uses k2tog (knit two together), a decrease stitch that shapes the crown of the hat. Working in the round on circular needles and double-pointed needles is essential for constructing this seamless hat.
Materials and Gauge
The Sea Witch hat is worked in worsted weight yarn, requiring approximately 95 yards (87 meters) each of a contrast color and main color. The sample was created using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Worsted in Amethyst Heather for the contrast color and Black for the main color, with an optional pom pom in Haze Heather. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rounds in 4 inches (10 cm).
Essential needles include a US 8 circular needle measuring 16 inches and double-pointed needles (dpns) in the same size, or whichever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions required are a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and an optional pom pom for the hat's crown.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Sea Witch hat is best suited for experienced knitters. The complexity stems primarily from the stranded colorwork pattern, which requires managing two colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and following a detailed chart. Knitters should have solid foundational skills before attempting this design.
